Regarding Weisbrod changing the scouting criteria; I believe we heard from Button in his recent Fan 960 interview on the issue, as well. He remarked that the criteria changes were significant, but that they really liked the new direction.

Without getting into the discussion of who should have been picked, Teräväinen is definitely not a "safe" pick that projects low. I don't know where that idea comes from.
Also, there were other players available in the draft than Jankowski and Teräväinen.

As it happens, Craig also had Teräväinen at 6th overall. So I don't think that theory is predictive.

The only other possible guy who could fetch us a second rounder without a NTC is Hudler, and I kinda want to keep him and Stempniak, who I'm not sure could fetch us a 2nd- plus we lack in RW so we best keep Stemps. However, we are log- jammed at LW.
|
Tangs may get us a 2014 2nd rounder. His value will be highest once the top FA have been signed and teams that have missed out on offensive players are still looking for upgrades. Contract is an issue and we may need to take money and a lesser player back.

I think the slight on him is that he doesn't look like he's putting in the effort every night. If that's the case one has to wonder how good he could be if someone can light a flame under him.

I want our picks to be players that hate to lose. Some of the names out there scare me, including Mantha and Gauthier. I want the team to draft players wbo bring it every night and have a high compete level. Not interested in drafting the next Rene Bourque who 'could' be a player 'if' he puts it all together.

I love the Jankowski pick. They picked the High potential guy over the more sure things (keeping in mind that the other "Sure Things" are at best 50/50 shots of playing in the NHL let alone meeting their potential)
|
What people are forgetting is that last years draft was considered weak, so picking where we were was going to be iffy. That was the year to swing for the fences and get an additional pick and if one if the two picks pan out, great.

From what I remember the new drafting criteria was focused on
1) Hockey IQ and skill
2) Character/compete level
Then size, skating ability etc. following after

I also remember him talking about something to the effect that scouts were not to talk to each other about prospects for their first viewing. He didn't want the scouts first impressions to be persuaded by others.

If #6 is Canadian then I would go with him.

That's flawed reasoning considering he was picked at 18 before the Flames picked Jankowski. How do you know that the Flames would have not picked him over Jankowski had he made it past the Hawks not that Teräväinen makes any real sense in this conversation in the first place.

We could have had him at 14...

Russian, Canadian, American, Swiss, Swedish......why the heck should it matter where the player is from a long as they represent what the team embodies. Canada doesn't hold all the cards in the face of the franchise business these days. The best player, regardless of where they are from should be the face of the franchise.

Depends I think. If we pick Monahan I think the face is still Baertschi because he will put up more points (in my opinion anyway). I don't see anyone as being the face of the franchise though.
You could think it is Toews in Chicago, but Kane is arguably the better player.
I don't think we need a face of the franchise like Iggy was. I'd rather have a good young core which is the face of the franchise, ex. Lindholm/Monahan, Baertschi and Gaudreau.

It's easier to sell to the casual fan a Canadian face of the franchise than a Swiss or Swede. Not saying it can't be done (look at Sundin in Toronto or the Sedins in Vancouver), but it's an easier sell especially if the Swiss and Canadian player have similar tallent levels.

Its an easy sell for any player in a Canadian market if they preform well regardless if they're Canadian or not. We love hockey, and what Canadian franchises want more than anything is to win. If that means its a Swiss player or a Swede, then the fans will be all for it. I mean, in a Canadian market is there such a thing as a casual fan? This is our NFL and MLB.
Not trying to argue. Just that I do not think it's right that if that pick ends up being Canadian, that he automatically becomes something he hasn't earned. Like 3j3 said, I would rather a core of players to be the faces of the franchise. We want winning here. Not a face we can rally behind.

Agree 100 per cent. The modern NHL it littered with talented studs who mail it in once they get a big payday, or can't put it all together mentally for more than 15 games at a time. Smarts and compete level are the key qualities this team needs to build around. You want players who will push themselves to improve, not ones you need to coddle and cajole.

I'm claiming Barkov becomes the biggest disappointment of the top 5 and a player picked between 15-30 will rise to the same value as MacKinnon, with nothing to wager but my cyber street cred.

Wotherspoon will for sure be an NHL'er. Seiloff has a good shot, Ramage as well. Offensively have there been as many Flames prospect to be excited about? Gaudreau, Sven, Reinhart are already showing promise. Then add a few exciting but risky picks like Janko, Granlund, Arnold. This is better than what we have had in years.
|
This better be one of the better prospect pools now that we have finished out of the play-offs 3 years in a row and just dealt our two best draft picks.
And other prospect pools had maybe guys and borderline guys as well so until some of these guys actually produce seems way to early to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, that's right, even if he doesn't pan out, it's a good pick. The reason why I say that is the "safe" pick, Teravainen in this case, will likely become a 3rd line centre. How easy is it to pick up a decent, 3rd liner in his prime? Probably a 3rd round pick would get it done. So say, they miss out on the "can't miss" Teravainen and he becomes an every day NHLer on the 3rd or 4th line, is that really that much of a loss to this organization? On the other hand, Jankowski has the potential to become a 1st line centre, which is worth much more than a low 1st round pick. He can also bust, but it's not much of a loss, when the alternative would be to get a 3rd liner at best.
|
I don't think Jankowski has any more chance of being a first line player than Teravainen and in fact like has a less chance.
I think the Jankowski is a boom or bust guy while Teravainen is a 3rd liner is garbage and not really sure where it is coming from outside of Flames fans defending the Jankowski pick.

I swear to god, every single organization in the NHL says the exact same thing.
Then they lose their minds come draft day and pick the biggest guy they can.
