Sign and trade??? Lol I'm not sure how I feel about this. The guy isn't terrible so if that's what we're shooting for then we got it.

I don't know about everyone else, but U was certain he was going to be gone so I never really considered the possibility

Sure there is a point, sign them long term because good free agents are rarely available,

I guess everyone saying Stajan is a good third line center missed all those games when he was playing as a third line center

Just because a guy is alright on the top line doesn't make him magically better on the third line

And what job is that?

Be a mediocre scorer (Stajan only has 30 more points in the past four seasons, only three more goals)? Be a clutch faceoff taker (Gordon hasn't been under 56% in that time, Stajan hasn't been over 50% since 2011-12)? Be an energy guy, good hitter, responsible defensively (there's nothing noticeably different in their stats for hits and blocked shots etc. and their playing styles are nothing to write home about)?

If you're overpaying Gordon, you're overpaying Stajan. They are both replaceable players who have their deficiencies and strengths. In fact the only one of them with a noticeably good stat is Gordon's faceoff percentage (and faceoffs are the thing that Stajan's supporters seem to keep going on about).

Stajan has over his time with the Flames become a reliable 2 way player and effective pk player.
The 3.1 per falls into the average market range of what he offers a team. Pts and minutes played.
I'm not thrilled it is a 4 year instead of a 3 year deal. But there is a certain level of importance that a veteran player wants to stay through a rebuild.
The Flames need to include players like this that truly want to play here. I believe a successful rebuild can not be solely built with young prospects and draft picks.
Burke realizes you need veteran like Stajan to fill in the pieces too.
Stajan is a guy that Burke wanted out of TO and he dealt him, now he is willing to resign him to a 4yr deal here. That tells me Stajan has earned Burkes respect. That is more than enough of a stamp of approval for me.

Honestly here, short of 10 million dollars, what is Calgary going to offer one of those guys?
There are only 2 cap hits above 4.5m. You don't think throwing 5 at a guy for a season is worth giving a look? Just shouldn't be Jokinen.

I just don't understand why Stajan keeps getting inked to these early contracts. Darryl signed him just one month after the Phaneuf trade. Burke didn't even let him hit the market, which wouldn't have been a mistake either. I'm not overly pissed about the signing, just don't see why.

The job is warm body that wants to be there.

Signing stajan now means you don't have to compete with offers in the summer.

You don't want to be left without a centre when the music stops in September, or stuck with a guy who is there for the paycheques waiting for an opportunity to leave.

I want to see us draft RW and D this year. The only top tier RW prospect in our system imo is Emile Poirier. We need to target some power forward type RWers to make up for our skinny short LW like Klimchuk, Sven, and Gaudreau.

I'd be happy if we only took RWers and Defencemen in this draft unless a C or G our scouting staff really likes is available in one of our spots.

I don't get the issue? We're a rebuilding team that probably isn't going to see much success for the next couple years at least. I get the love for our prospects and wanting young guys to get a chance.. but guess what? Nothing has changed. If you think Burke (or by proxy the next GM) will keep Stajan around if he's pushed down the depth charts--you're nuts lol.

When you consider the Flames need at least some veteran presence in the forward corps moving forward, and getting similar players elsewhere will cost that much, and perhaps can't attract higher quality FA's without overpaying even more, I'm resigned to thinking this signing makes sense.

It just puts an exclamation point where we're at and where we're going to be over the next few seasons. It isn't pretty.

The more I think about it I am fine with the cap hit but still not a fan of the term. Stajan clearly doesn't put winning at the top of his list. I think he would prefer having a bigger role on a lesser team than a lesser role on a top team which is fine. He wants those responsibilities and likes being a mentor for the younger kids. I am sure he has also fallen in love with the city and wants to stay here.

2 years would have been good. I think the Flames might stand pat at the center position for another year. I don't see Backs moving and obviously Monahan is here to stay.

Did not see him as a Burke guy. Guess i was wrong. Money is fine, and I suspect in 2 years a player like him will be making $4 + million with cap going up. He will be tradeable in 2 years, if some of the youngsters can push him out.

I have to presume Burke see's little chance of top 6 centers signing with Calgary in the next couple of years.

Cheer up folks with Stajan as one of our top 6 centers next year, it should give us a jump on McDavid. Now Burke better get rid of Cammi and Stempniak or i will be pissed.
