Flames Pending Flames Free Agents.... who to re-sign?

Calgary has many expiring contracts with an abundance of cap space, so the chance to affect change in relatively short order is a real possibility. I know this isn't the route I want Burke to take this team, but I have a feeling it'll happen regardless.

That being said, are there pending FA of their own whom you'd want Burke to re-sign before dipping into the FA pool from the rest of the league? I've bolded my choices to retain (either for the AHL or NHL squads), everyone else should be either traded or let go.

UFAs

Mike Cammalleri
Matt Stajan
Lee Stempniak
Kevin Westgarth
Blair Jones
Ben Street
Chris Butler
Kris Russell
Derek Smith
Reto Berra
Joey MacDonald

RFAs

Paul Byron
Joe Colborne
Lance Bouma
Chad Billins
Ben Hanowski
Lane MacDermid
Olivier Roy
Joni Ortio
Mark Cundari
James Martin
Chris Breen
David Eddy

Re-sign all the RFAs except Breen, Martin, and Eddy. Re-sign Butler and Russell, and re-sign Street to a 2-way contract.

The only player I would re-sign is Blair Jones. Hopefully after Hartley is gone he's given a fair shake.

Edit: didn't see Russel, but him too.

Burke said he'll be trading half the UFA's, and the other half will be re-signed.

However, the way I see it is this...

SIGNED:

Mike Cammalleri (we need a top-six winger; we're nothing without him).
Kris Russell (obvious reasons).
Derek Smith (good depth, potential to adequately step up to top four when called upon)
Blair Jones (good 4th liner)

TRADED / UN-SIGNED:

Matt Stajan
Lee Stempniak
Kevin Westgarth
Chris Butler
Reto Berra
Joey MacDonald

Butler because there are no better options, and he's been decent this season.

Russell because he's good.

B. Jones because of truculence.

Russell and Berra for sure. Wouldn't mind seeing Street and B. Jones signed to two way deals because they're good in the AHL and they make decent injury callups.

Russell, Butler, Jones and Street.

Jones and Street are tweeners that are good for the farm team as Veterans but can fill in admirably on the big team if needed.

Russell has been huge for the team this year and has contributed to 51% of our even strength goals for. Really driving our offense along with Hudler.

Butler is just a maybe. If the return on him is poor (4th rounder or less) I would re-sign him since he has showed signs of improvement this year and is a decent, cheap bottom pairing d-man.

Jones - 2-way contract
Westgarth - 4th line toughness

This poll lacks the "none of the above" option.

re:Cammalleri - He should be resigned if we can't get the big return for him. A rebuilding team needs Veterans, I think he can jive with the re-build myself. When Cammalleri first went to montreal he made comments about how much more take home pay you get in Alberta, which tells me he's aware of the personal benefits to staying through a rebuild.

With that said, a mid first round pick and he's outta here.

What's wrong with Berra? Yes, I think Ramo is better, but they need two goalies and I doubt anyone better would be willing to sign. I think Berra splitting games with Ramo is perfectly fine for the next couple seasons.

I only picked Russell. Maybe B. Jones, but he is likely replacable by a guy like Reinhart.

Sorry...I don't see him as an NHL goalie. Bring Ortorio (sp?) up next season.

As for the list, at least UFA's, Russell and Street. Dump the rest.

If the return for Cammy isn't great, then you look at resigning him. It's not the end of the world if he doesn't get traded. However, you run the risk of him not signing in the off-season. Tough one IMO, you need veterans to show the kids the way.

UFA's to keep: Russell and Street

Either way: Cammalleri and Berra

Trade or dump: Rest of the list.

RFAs to tender: Byron, Colborne, Bouma, Billins, Hanowski, MacDermid, Roy, Ortio and Cundari
