Hell...maybe even keep one who wants to be here...like 4 years of Stajan impacts anything. helps push the rookies to be better and earn their spots. in year 4 he will be a 4th line part time center hopefully and helping the young guys learn the game...who gives a shat.

The Flames need to reach the cap floor for next season and will have trouble attracting UFAs when the team will be at the bottom of the standings. They also need a guy that can play center at both ends of the ice against teams top lines while developing young prospects. Given Stajan's resurgence over the past two seasons and his respect in the locker room and community, he seems like a good fit. 4 years might be a little on the long side, but in all likelihood that is how long this rebuild will take before seeing much success.

2 years for more money would have been fine. 4 is garbage. Bad signing. Stajan has consistently shown he can't be a top 9 player on a winning team. I'm bummed. Bad signing.
|
When has he been on a winning team? When he was a rookie and got 14 goals on the third line back in 2003-4? Because that's the only team he's played on that's been good enough for the playoffs. The only thing he has shown is that he cannot be a centrepiece for a team, and this deal shows that he will most definitely be a secondary part of this club going forward.

Looking at the Leafs on CapGeek, it appears that Kessel is the only NTC/NMC contract they have currently that was signed by Burke, and it's only a modified NTC/NMC for the final year of the deal (the first year he was eligible for one).

Anyone who thinks this is a dumb signing really hasn't been watching Stajan over the last 2 years.

I'm not sure Burke expects to be winning a ton of games in the next 4 years. When you do a full teardown like the Flames are, it can take a while before you're competitive again. Even a team that did everything right like St. Louis took a good 5-6 years to get solidly back into the playoffs.

I wouldn't of taken Stajan back for free. Should of been time to move on from this guy, not give him 4 more years..

As long as we move out Cammy/Stempniak for picks/prospects I don't really have an issue with this.
3.125 for Stajan with the cap going to 70+ million next year is fine.

Perhaps some people see it for what it is, and not through their pre-concieved biases?
Stajan is a flawed player. That's why he gets $3 million instead of $5+. Offensively unreliable, but capable of going on streaks. Hard working, willing to accept any role, someone the team trusts to put out in nearly any situation. In short, the kind of attitude we want the kids with the talent to emulate.
Stajan fills a need, simple as that. He doesn't fill the top line, consistent high scoring need, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have brought him back. It will take time for the likes of Monahan and (hopefully) Baertschi to grow into those roles.

Only 13% of CPers voted to re-sign Stajan in this thread, which was started a mere three days ago.
Now it seems like the majority are good with this signing.

The term is surprising. I was expecting 2-3 years at the same cap hit as his last contract, 4 seems like an extra year. But this is a bad team that needs to reach the cap floor....they are going to have to hand out a few bad contracts to get there. Hopefully they can keep the term to no more than 4 years on this floor type deals to keep the odd veteran around.

Would I of liked Stajan to have been re-signed, no. However, its a pretty fair deal and we need some vets on this team. The Flames really like Stajan and he is liked in the room.
Stempniak/Cammalleri shouldn't be re-signed though.

Fair signing for both sides. Say what you will about Stajan but for the money and the role he plays the only thing I see possibly being an issue is length of the contract. I would be willing to bet that if he does not have a place on our roster halfway through this contract it will be very tradable with the cap going up.

3.125 million of an expected 70+ million cap hit, which will likely continue to increase is a solid deal.

I personally thought he was good as gone when Burke took over so I really never thought of him coming back as a possibility. I'm not doing cartwheels over this signing but at the same time I'm not going to jump off a cliff as this team does need some veteran players going forward and with the cap increasing his contract becomes manageable. Unlike Stempniak, Cammalleri and other veteran players on this team when Stajan isn't scoring he's still useful.

I would have preferred they moved on but i'm not that mad about the extension.
He's a servicable NHL player in a very valuable position. Flames couldn't really go into next season with Monahan, Backlund, Colborne, Knight, etc. They needed a veteran and Stajan fits the bill.
I think if Backlund made bigger strides in the past two years, we probably wouldn't need to extend Stajan, but Backs has been injury plagued.
There were times last year, where Stajan was the only forward who gave a damn. He was arguably their best forward last year, which speaks to how bad this team is.
