The Flames get the type of player they were lacking and get a little closer to the cap floor. Cap hit for jones might be a little high but I rather pay more for a 28 year old player for three years than to a 33 year old player. It's not like the flames need that money for the next few seasons anyway.

People are saying that Jones was the Avs buyout candidate but if the flames were to buyout someone I'm sure that would be tanguay. I'm glad the last of the county club members are finally gone.
I don't think either fanbase should be super pissed over a deal like this, each side has a reason to be happy.

David jones is big, but I don't recall him being a tough guy to play against if physical at all. He's more like a David moss type player.

I never saw a single post that said that.

However, what I personally think is that what Jones brings, the Flames need, and what Tanguay brings, the Flames don't need.

Huh.

From what I remember from a previous discussion with you was that most players have their peak goal years by 25, but anywhere up to 27 for their single largest output season.

Then there is a trail off in points slightly, to be resurrected again between 31-34?

The top 4 came from another poster which is what I was addressing in the post you quoted.

He is worse than Sarich in every phase of the game except fighting. When on the ice playing he is a clear downgrade from Sarich.

It's not a bad part but not good either. We get a bad defenseman but who cares as we will lose a ton anyways and he should be the 7th guy at best. But we get some fighting ability which can help entertain fans during a long season.

I understand the optimism with Jones' 27 goal season from several years ago but really, aside from Cammalleri, what player who has come to the Flames in recent history has re-discovered his scoring touch from previous successful seasons? He strikes me as a Darryl Sutter type player; big 3rd or 4th line 25-35 point player.

Here's one sample based of guys from the early '80s to early '00s and it has it as 25 years old:

http://www.arcticicehockey.com/2010/...-game-peak-age

I've also seen this chart which looks at players between 2005 and 2012:

Again, the peak is around 25 but there is a bit of a jump up in the early 30s, so maybe that's what you're thinking of.

Tanguay was a zero value guy for Calgary. The hope with Jones is that he returns to his 20 goal ways and you can probably include him in a trade in a few years.

Once Iginla was traded Tangs was almost a negative value player for this team. I actually think he will fare well in Denver but he wasn't good for this team as his effort level was poor and I imagine his attitude wouldn't be great for a younger locker room. I don't believe Jones will set the world on fire but it's not unreasonable to expect 20 goals and solid two way play. IMO an even trade that helps both teams.

Good trade for the Flames. They were buttery soft last season. Jones and O'Brien will improve on that. Tanguay was was a guy who did not want to be in Calgary, so just removing him is an improvement to the roster. Adding another natural RW, and a guy with some jam, is a huge improvement over what we gave up. Sarich was a warrior, but that was two or three seasons ago. He had become a part-time player, was brutally slow and was having problems picking his spots to make hits. Loved his attitude but it was time for him to move on as well. O'Brien's mean streak and dickish behavior will be welcomed on our blueline. Come the start of the season I really think that those over-reacting will come to like how these two pieces plug into the line-up.

Yup... glad to be purging some the "Iginla and friends" tag on this team and start building this team for more than just one guy. I don't particularly like Jones's contract, but good riddance to Tanguay.

This deal just seems so meh ... it doesn't really push us closer to the future or kill us.

Seems like a pretty neutral deal. No real big winner or loser. Interesting for you Flames fans will be to see how Jones rebounds. That's the question mark in this deal.

I don't like it because:

1) I was hoping we could dump Tanguay without taking a bad contract back
2) SOB does not exactly seem like a guy you want in your room

Overall, though, whatever - I was hoping we could get some sort of a pick out of dealing Tanguay, but oh well. And I guess we need somebody getting paid to reach the floor.
Whether you liked him as a player or not, labeling someone like Tanguay a cancer seems a horribly unfair indictment of a teammate, man, husband, father and contributing member of the Calgary community. Driveby slanderous remarks such as this to a persons character are IMO, egregious and unnecessary.

After digesting the trade, I guess it was decent for the Flames.

Tanguay's departure will give Baertschi more opportunity to earn ice time.

Jones is a gamble as to whether he can come close to his previous offensive production, but does fill an organizational need in terms of size and position.

Sarich's ice time was decreasing and his NHL career is likely done after this year.

SOB is a bit worrisome for me with his history of office antics and right now there appears to be no solid leadership core in the locker room. I hope they can keep him under control.

I would have expected the Flames to have gotten a mid or late round draft pick out of the deal as it stands... seeing as Colorado was getting one of their star players back from the dynasty days and they were saving a bit of cap space in the process.

Agreed. I think there is a question on Tanguay performing as well. His offensive output has declined 3-seasons in a row and he seems very effected based on the chemistry he has with his wingers. But the real question mark is Jones.

If he returns to being a 40 to 45 point winger this is a win for Calgary. If he doesn't we may be buying him out next summer.
