Also, I'm up to four recurring characters from Fallout 3 so far (won't name them to avoid spoilers). One I fully expected, the other three I did not expect at all. Really cool to see them tying the game into FO3.

EDIT: If anyone's curious as to who the recurring characters are, they're listed below in the spoiler tags

Spoiler!
Why would you do that? I've barely made a dent in the story and I've been played non stop since Tuesday.

I stumbled upon the massive Corvega Assembly Plant. Wandered into a broken duct in an alley and ended up in the basement. Cleared out most of the place, the roof, the catwalk, so many raiders. Things got hairy when I was stuck between two semi trailers outside but got through it.

There are a couple rooms left in the place but I left it, I'm assuming it's part of a mission at some point.

Finding it difficult to get enough of the proper crap to build up my camp though, my Kingdom for some copper. Will be getting the scavenger perk next.

You can take stuff from the workstations in other settlements too by using transfer.

It's actually part of a really early mission -- the first one you get from the Minutemen.

Cool. Haven't done that yet. I did the first one for the Brotherhood of Steel, setting up some stuff for sanctuary and random things from Fenway park, but mostly just wandering and building crap.

Trying to immerse myself in this game more. Always here about the time people spend playing Fallout, Skyrim etc, I cruised through them all sticking with the main story.

I've got my settlement up and running now but I can't find where I can build a gate for defense. I can make walls and a doorway but I want a proper gate.

Where is it?

I think you build it out of walls and a doorway + door

Hmmm I tried that but the provisioner's brahmin couldn't fit through the doorway, so I deleted it.

just finished the quest where the gouls are bothering a settlement I can't remember the name. I ended up running into two legendary gouls and killing both i got a legendary piece of leg armor that deals 10 percent of damage you take back to the enemy that dealt it, and a legendary baton that does extra damage to limbs

Definitely different when you start out; see 3 dogs and figure "well this should be a good tune-up" and then they wreck you. Takes several shots to kill even a weak enemy, at least in Hard mode. Get swarmed and it's all over.

Blowing up things doesn't seem to do as much damage as one would expect, but the Molotov cocktails rule. Love it so far.

The upgrading mechanics and crafting is fantastic. Each gun type has so many variations it's ridiculous. The shooting is actually much improved as are the animations. The animations are way more dynamic than in Fallout 3, the characters even have momentum when they run.

Because first and foremost I play Fallout for the story. I knew you could play after the story so I decided to power through it and now I'm doing nothing but building settlements, doing the odd sidequests here and there, and exploring.

Anyone else find The Swan? By far the toughest boss fight I've done so far.

So a couple questions for the pro's.

First time playing a Fallout game. I did the quest where you get the power armour. Does the power run out on it shortly after you get it? If not, I may have broken it

The quest you get where you need to make some beds for the community. Seems like I can only craft it right on the spot and drop it behind me so now I have like 5 beds in the front of the crafting bench. Can you actually move them around after crafting? I couldn't seem to move them.

I'm playing the PC version btw, not sure I'm overly fond of the crafting system as of yet.

The power armour needs fusion cores. The first one you get is low on power, pretty much as a tease. You need to find more to get the armour to work again.

The crafting/building system kinda sucks. When you're in workshop mode press E to select the bed. Then you'll be able to move it. I'm not sure why you couldn't move when when you first crafted them, but you should.

I found both the Gun Nut and the perq where you get extra components when breaking down weapons to be essential - I built a scoped sniper rifle and this saves me a huge amount of (rare) ammo since I can now reliably hit at long distance instead of relying on VATS. I also converted the short-barrel shotgun to a long barrel for medium range hitting power, again in the hopes of saving ammo.

Ammo is really a limiting factor, going melee might be the way to go in Hard as you can use up half your entire supply in just one area if you are fighting mobs that don't drop much. Plus there nothing more conducive to panic than running out of the most suitable weapon's ammo just when you really really need it.

It's sad when you have to club mole rats and radroaches to death every time because you can't waste precious pistol rounds...

Lastly, as a tactics tip, don't get too dependent on a favorite weapon. Practice with them all and find where they are most suitable. For instance, pistols are great against ghouls as they like to run in straight lines, usually more-or-less right at you, and they usually don't have armor. Mirelurks you want to shotgun when they open up their shell. Raiders are excellent sniping targets, and in close automatic pistols work, going for the head where there usually isn't armor. Weak but quick enemies you can bash or stab. Fast enemies that evade your fire are best handled by short bursts from an automatic weapon aimed at centre mass. And so on.

Oh yah, and if something is fast and tough, crippling its leg or legs will make it infinitely easier to kill. That perq that adds a cumulative 10% to your accuracy in VATS against a specific body part per shot will be, I expect, the only way my extremely squishy character will be able to advance against tough enemies later.

To add to this, there is a Supermutant mob NW of The Fens that drops a leg-crippling auto-pistol. It's super handy for starting attacks with.

I took the extra ammo perk and being low on ammo isn't an issue. I've sold thousands worth of the smaller calibre pistol rounds. My issue is finding a good long range weapon

Really glad I had my companion hauling around a Fat Man for me as a just-in-case scenario for my stealth/sniper character. The fight to retake the Minutemen castle would have been incredibly hard without it
