The scrapper perk is great for this. I get a few with every gun I scrap. I think I'm up over 100 on hand right now.
On another topic, the UI for settlement building feels like it was done by an intern the week before release. Very frustrating. Hopefully it gets patched or otherwise fixed.

So I haven't started playing it yet, waiting for days off. This whole settlement building people keep mentioning; is this a mandatory part of the game? Half the reason I quit playing Fallout 3 (an some of the GTA's) was messing around with side quests and what not and never getting anywhere on the main story. Is this going to be one of those things?

Game is great! I feel like I'm the only person actually doing the story though...

It's an open-world game. Nothing is mandatory.

I feel like I'm always running out of bullets, maybe I need to spend less time shooting people and more time building my settlements.

I picked up the perk that increases the amount of ammo you find in containers. Probably not necessary, but I like not having to save ammo

I find it totally necessary. I have one rank and I'm still almost always out of bullets.

The first mission you do for the Brotherhood of Steel, where you go into Arcjet Systems and have to fight a bunch of Synths, gives you a TON of fusion ammo. I came out of there with like 225 ammo for my fusion guns. And Paladin Danse will do all the fighting for you, if you're low on ammo heading in. I've been sitting pretty ever since (Laser Musket FTW. He also gives you a decent fusion rifle at the end of the quest).

Yeah that's the gun I'm using actually. And you go through the 225 fusion ammo pretty quick when you are fighting super mutants

Ha, fair. I'm trying to steer clear of Super Mutants until I'm more powered up.

This was awesome, but terrifying at the same time.
Fortunately I was close to a shelter, so I just went inside and slept for the night.
I bought a Hazmat suite from the vendor - great to reducing rad exposure for certain quests!

I despise the Laser Musket. Having one shot and then having to reload each time is a pain. Give me a good sniper rifle for long distance combat over that any day.

I finished the main story as fast as I could (Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, sided with Brotherhood of Steel) and have been waiting a while to discuss it. I won't spoil anything, but was anyone else's mind blown when you finally get to The Institute and learned about Father???
Also, I'm up to four recurring characters from Fallout 3 so far (won't name them to avoid spoilers). One I fully expected, the other three I did not expect at all. Really cool to see them tying the game into FO3.
EDIT: If anyone's curious as to who the recurring characters are, they're listed below in the spoiler tags

The lighting system seems very poorly optimized, when outdoors with static lighting the game rains smooth as silk. Get into an environment with any kind of dynamic lighting and it slows a whole lot, never had a game run smoother outside than inside.

Man you can spend forever just working on building up a settlement and commerce.
I walked around transferring bottle caps from settlers to my personal pocket. Call it taxation.
I also built a wall at the front of sanctuary with defenses on top, spotlights etc. Looks like a prison.
