Calgary's right wing position was incredibly weak when he signed. Unfortunately for him, he was unable to make the opening line up or to establish himself as a regular on the NHL roster throughout the season. I don't think he made the wrong choice. There was a lot of opportunity on the Flames last season for right wingers and I'm sure the team would have been ecstatic if he grabbed hold of it, but he took a while to adjust to the pro game even at the AHL level.
I like him as a player and think that he still has some potential to be a regular NHLer. He is going to have to really make an impression the next opportunity he gets.

I was expecting there to be a lot of cuts today.
I kind of disagree with sending Parsons and Foo down, but I'm not overly shocked.

In hindsight, it likely would have been better for him to have signed with the Oilers. If Ty Rattie is going to be the top line RW, then surely Foo would make that roster and would be making significantly more money.
With that said, as a fan I am happy he signed with the Flames, if not only for the fact that he turned down the Oilers.

For me Foo is a little bit better than Hathaway and Lazar in terms of scoring and creating offence. But for the 13th or 14th spot I don't care. Hope Foo plays well and earn the first call up.

I don't believe there was any serious thought that Parsons would start the year on the NHL roster. He JUST turned 21-years-old, and has only played one year of professional hockey. The best thing for him and the Flames is to focus on his role in Stockton, and establish himself as an AHL starting goalie.

That is still a ton of defensemen left in camp.

I liked Foo's game and think he's more likely to be an NHLer now than before this camp.
He didn't do enough to make the team don't get me wrong, but he showed the other parts of his game are more advanced than I thought.
Couldn't finish though, and that needs to change. I think he's a solid call up as a winger that won't hurt you though.

Only real shocker for me personally is Kyllington. I felt he deserved the final try out game in SJ at the very least. Ah well. Hopefully he explodes offensively down in Stockton. He's really close to being a full time NHL player.

As of right now I would
To AHL: Gillies (G), Valimaki (D), Hogstrom (D) & Mangiapane (F)
Waive/AHL: Lazar (F), Peluso (F), Prout (D)
PTO Guys: Release all or maybe sign one to two-way deal for depth, assign to AHL
Keep on opening day roster: Dube (Starting lineup), Hathaway (13th Forward) & Andersson (6/7th Dman)
Tricky part is with Andersson is getting him into the lineup for a few games early on which I think is harder playing on right side because he would replace Stone rather than Kulak on left side.
If Andersson won't get any game action early on I would send him down and keep a depth dman like Prout.

Could Care Less

I’m not surprised at all by Kyllington. He had some nice flashes but he still makes terrible puck decisions and is often caught out of position. He has a lot of work to do IMO.

Its interesting. He just seems to be one of those polarizing players (for whatever reason.) I watched most of the preseason games and I just didn't see this. For the most part, he looked very calm, controlled and composed (both with and without the puck) to me.
EDIT FOR FULL DISCLOSURE: I've been a bit of a Kylington fan boy since before we even drafted him. Therefore, my observations may be tainted by confirmation bias. But still...

He, much like Bennett, is an extremely polarizing player.
I think he will be fine, he just needs more time.
It's easy to forget how young he is considering he has played 3 years in the AHL.
The important thing is he has improved each year and he should be the go to guy this year with Andersson looking like he is a lock to make the big club.
Even after Valimaki gets sent down I believe they will be the top 2 guys, playing in all key situations.
It's going to be fun having a blueline with Hanifin, Andersson, Valimaki and Kylington on it for years to come. All 4 have good potential and are young up and comers.
Just because they are all at different stages of development doesn't mean I'm not still high on them. Some guys take longer than others and when you are talking about defenceman that is not necessarily a bad thing.

I like Foo's game. He was just edged out by Czarnick, Mangiapane and Dube. No shame in being sent down if he can prove that he is too good for the AHL when he gets there.

All I can get

The message to Foo is to go down to Stockton and dominate in the AHL (like Czarnik and Mangiapane).
However much Kylington is skilled, he's still an adventure with the puck (and not in a good way).

He's close, but not quite there. Wish they would have given him that last game in SJ, just to skate on the same ice against Erik Karlsson.

I disagree with Kylington being an adventure with the puck. Even last year by all accounts he was rounding out his game quite well in Stockton. And this camp he was playing a very reserved game except for last night where he opened up a fair bit to show off his offensive skills.
His defensive liability issues are really overblown by some here. I'm not saying he's a saint but he is exponentially better than when he arrived in his first year.

Kylington still needs to add man strength IMO. One of his biggest struggles at the nhl level will be trying to physically battle against NHL sized powerforwards. Liking his progression though. Time for him to dominate the AHL

This is it for me. His decision making defensively is fine. Could use some fine tuning, but overall he's pretty strong now.
It's the ability to clear the front of the net and win puck battles in corners. He's going to need a brute of a partner because he simply lacks the size to do that, and gets pushed around at times. If he adds enough in other areas, you can live with that, but you do need to find a big strong partner for him, not unlike the line combinations you need around Gaudreau (Gaudreau obviously being MUCH smaller and needing size around him more than Kylington).

Kylington-Prout could well be that pair for Stockton

I think this falls somewhere in between wishful thinking and delusion.
He was good for about one bad pinch per period and looked physically weak during in puck battles.
All of his knocks are still very visibly there after 3 years of pro. Don’t get your hopes up.

This is by far the best camp I've seen from Kylington. It's the first time I've seen him and thought he could play in the NHL full time.
He's only 21 and right on the cusp. I think he'll be a main roster player down the road.
