A lot of short, quick and accurate passes to speed up the tempo and get the puck up ice quickly. Fast skaters are great but when you move the puck like that you don't need a ton of them to be a 'fast' team.

It remains to be seen if Sutter can keep them going on the right path, but it's exciting to think about how good they might possibly be when you see such marked improvement after just a couple practices and in their 1st game under the new coach.

That exposure requirement count down is a club must expose a player within the criteria (27 games this year or 54 in the last 2 year). Every team has to have 1 Dman and 2 Forwards that are exposed with that criteria.

At the end of the year, Nestorv or Klyington will fit that criteria.

You could literally see them want to revert back to their lazy play at times lol. I’m sure Sutter had to keep hitting them with a stick

My biggest concern was maybe Gaudreau's choice to dump more. I am sure that Sutter likes that kind of play, but I think in Gaudreau's case, especially if he has the space he should carry it in.
Monahan was working hard to adjust to the new style and maybe he might find something there. I know I enjoyed Monahan chipping the puck in more as gaining the blue line has never been his strong suit.

It's minor, but 2-3 times I saw Gaudreau go for a hard dump when he could have gained the line fairly easily. I think once he adjusts a bit more to the system he'll find himself making that choice more naturally, cause last night, it just felt like forced dumps.

Yeah Nesterov to me was the single player behind the rest of the group most of the night.

Slow to get to pinches.

Held on to pucks too long missing opportunities to get pucks to the net.

Took a penalty.

I would assume we see Kylington next game.

Yea I wasn’t a big fan of Nesterov and Ritchie, although didn’t have a bad night, doesn’t belong with Johnny and Monny.

He seems to have decent speed but not much in way of acceleration. He looked like he was labouring up the ice when leaving the d-zone.

I like him but he is what he is, a bottom end of the roster forward.

If we can fill that hole in the lineup somehow we could have 4 solid lines.

Definitely right about acceleration, plus he has zero ability to handle or pass the puck and they at least need a guy to make a pass or two

Agree on Ritchie

It was almost comical, there was a play where he was in a position to push the puck forward and try to split the D and they both closed on him easily

Also I saw Tkachuk dump it in when going in 2 on 2 with Lindholm and under no real pressure. I thought that stuck out

Probably a normal adjustment period.

Sutter wouldn't tell him to dump it in every time, but he would say dump it if you don't have a play, we're not turning it over at the blueline every second or third attempt.

So he's leaning towards safety to start.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but I didn't notice it - but i noticed the bump back to Johnny on the power play entry wasn't happening. Although, we didn't do a great job of gaining entry trying to gain the zone on the rush either. That might be something that needs some tinkering. Maybe a little bit of both so we don't become too predictable.

They did use it in the third, but the end result is that it was used less frequently and executed way better when it was done

It’s a good tool but can’t be the only tool, and can’t be done wrong

Great game.
21 assists and only a +1...should be benched

If Monahan can keep up the hitting and transform into being hard to play against along with still being a great finisher I think we got something here.

Clearly, he's drawing pictures of him inflicting pain on Eric Francis.

I like how Eric Francis then tries to defend himself saying, well I know all the Sutter brothers birthdays like that ####ing matters.

What a dolt and way to ruin a touching moment.

Also, why does he know their birthdays? That’s really bizarre.

Great game.
Oh right, Special Needs 2! Almost forgot about him since the team, as a whole, did quite well in that game!

That may have been more of a response to NOT seeing a high forward in a position to go for it - both in terms of him having support close by and, if he loses possession or is quickly forced to dump further down ice, having someone in position to pressure the D-man picking up the puck.

The problem with Johnny crossing the blue line is that he's often got to spend time waiting for others to be caught up to him - and so he becomes the sole focus of the D/backchecking forwards. In those instances a hard dump in is a better and safer choice than turning it over at the blue line or close to it.
