To me I think Darryl is just a really good communicator and this is a line that simultaneously roasted the press while potentially motivating 3 forward lines

That was a great game to watch. Such a drastic change in the little details, the Flames have been guilty of thinking the game very slowly. In this game they were on the puck and then quickly making the next play. No hesitation, all confidence.
That was Gio's best game all year.
Lindholm got roughed up a good bit and still was battling out there.
Hanifin really has taken strides, literally and figuratively.
I think Dube and Mange are poised to take it to the next level under Sutter.
It looked like an actual TEAM effort out there. Everyone engaged, everyone pulling in the same direction.
I love this kind of hockey.
Montreal will be a much tougher out on Saturday, going to be a good one.

Biggest thing I noticed: quicker, more-decisive puck movement. Felt like even for Gaudreau it was two strides then move the puck. I think that'll make a huge difference - it makes it so much easier for the guys off the puck. Even when we're dumping and chasing, if it happens quickly, the guys at the blueline are already at speed and the forecheck is that much more effective. Really noticed Dube in particular attacking dump-ins with speed.

Loved this Derek Ryan quote about last nights game, from Hailey Salvian’s Athletic recap:
Quote:
“I think it was evident in our last couple days of practice that it’s very obvious how he wants us to play,” Derek Ryan said. “He wants a fast-paced game, structured, and I think that’s what you saw for just about a full 60 minutes tonight.
“I thought everybody was confident and 100 percent in what we needed to do on the ice on every shift. Nobody was hesitating or questioning anything. It was a lot of fun to play that way.”

Really illustrates the difference that a coach can make. No, a coach doesn’t tell the team to play slow, or to not go to the front of the net offensively, or to turn the puck over at the blue lines.
But it depends on the clarity and reinforcement of the messaging. If it is clearly and repeatedly stressed that the team needs to turn it up ice quickly, instead of continual D to D passes, then you will get more of that desired behaviour. If they are continually reminded to get to the front of the net and gets shots at the net, that will happen.
So if one coach isn’t clear in the message, and if it is not constantly focused and reinforced, then those behaviours won’t occur with consistency.
After one game, most of us can identify particular actions that Sutter feels are important.
And that doesn’t even get into the bigger picture of culture and accountability.
Coaching matters.

Sutter matters. IMO there’s very few coaches that can get this from this team and less that can make it stick. Sutter is a bigger name than them, has more credibility, which is more than you can say for any previous coach they had. I don’t think many other coaches, including ones who are successful with other teams, could do it. Sutter is a top 5-3 coach in the NHL.

180 game.
That wasn't a, oh they had their confidence and everything was bouncing their way cakewalk. That was a, know where you are, know where you are supposed to be. Break out like this, forecheck like this.
Be here. Be there, don't think, play hockey kinda game.
I hope it sticks, because that is good hockey.

Great game last night! Really impressed with how quick they have adjusted their play. Saw Andersen go behind our net to set-up a break out and then almost catch himself and just take off immediately. So seems like they are getting used to the style and it'll be fun to see when they really settle in.
Wasn't really a fan of Nesterov he just looked out of place too many times. I think the higher tempo game they played last night really exposed him. Would love to see Kylington but is there some issue with him playing 6 games and needing to be protected? Maybe that's why they've been hesitant to play him but I'd really like to see him more.

Pretty sure the Gretzky family tree is now 4th. Ahead are clan Sutter, Hull, and Stastny.

I believe this was resolved some time ago. Kylington is not exempt from protection. He may provide a bit more with his skating, but for a long time every coach has been frustrated by how he plays without the puck.

Bobby and Dennis are brothers, Brett is the son of Bobby. So they don't count in this comparison.
Same with Paul being the son of Peter Stastny, whose brothers are Marian and Anton.
Now, if you're just proving that the Gretzky's aren't top 3 in family scoring. I'm behind you on this one!

I noticed one sequence where Tanev collected the puck in his own end and immediately started sprinting up the ice with it. It's little things like that which can wear down the other team and keep the pressure on. Much more entertaining to watch as well.

Was really nice seeing a near 60 minute effort from the team and frankly, not a surprise given Sutter is there now. Also didn't surprise me to see the bottom 6 lead the team in driving play as the north-south, game is closer to their games than the top 6. A lot of our stars like to slow the game down so I think it'll take a few games and practices for them to adapt but you could see they were trying. They think the game at a high level so I think they'll get there. Saw a few instances of players moving the puck backwards instead of forwards out of panic and habit but much fewer than before. Markstrom and Rittich are going to enjoy playing behind a structured, defensively responsible team, I think.

Yeah, I was specifically mentioning the family name or the NHL family tree. The Tkachuk one will be interesting when all is said and done. Potential to pass the Gretzky's if Matthew and Brady have long careers. I think the Sutter one will be hard to beat.

Capfriendly says he needs to play 3 more games to meet the requirements.
