This incident alone has damaged the image of the NFL in a big way, and the sad thing is, what was it for? Ray Rice wasn't a big name player that the NFL marketed around. The NFL didn't even need to have the video to come to the logical choice to suspend Ray Rice much longer than they did initially. If they did the right thing in the first place, we wouldn't be talking about this. Even if the video was still made public.
Such a stupid mistake that should cost Goodell his job, because his integrity is shot and the image of 'The Shield' is damaged.

I doubt it damages the NFL at all, like most other incidents people will forget about Ray Rice in a few days. Maybe it'll make it back into the news cycle in a few weeks if we find out NFL executives did know about the video, but it won't effect the league. Just look at ratings from last week, and probably tomorrow nights game (with the Ravens involved).
Did it make Goddell and his cronies look bad for a couple days? Sure, but not many are going to stop watching because of it.

In a way I don't like how this video has come out and been played in the media as much as it has. Mostly because the victim Janay Rice nee Palmer, has been forced to deal with this a lot because of it.
On one hand it's indisputable evidence that this happened and that the law and the NFL really screwed the pooch on this. It has made Ray Rice have to deal with more severe punishment that he deserved. But I can see how someone is now really uncomfortable being seen by millions, and now getting this much attention for getting hit by a guy whom she ended up marrying, and all the accompanying judging that will be passed her way. It's easy for me to scratch my head and wonder why the hell she's still with him if he can treat her like that. But I've never lived in her shoes so who am I to tell her she needs to protect herself and leave this guy. Or does she need to be reminded to take the blinders off for her own good? I'm not trying to blame the victim or anything....but how do you draw that line if the victim is okay with staying with a partner with an abusive past is it my business to tell her to rethink things because maybe she is happy, and maybe he never does it again? But if it does...was there a moral obligation to provide added protection for someone who can be blinded as to how sever her circumstances really are? It definitely brings up conflict for me.

I think it's more a cycle of abuse/battered person syndrome. Somebody tweeted a good image of it the other day. It was something like this, but a bit more eloquent:

I follow quite a few current and ex-Saints on Twitter, and they've been bringing this statement up quite a bit on there (especially the retired players - Vilma, Shanle, etc - who don't need to worry about the NFL's wrath). You can tell they're absolutely loving watching Goodell squirm now.

For as much as Goodell and the NFL are getting absolutely killed by this, does it seem like the NJ prosecutors are not getting much heat at all?
Rice knocks out a woman cold, he pleads not guilty, then pleads to get one year rehabilitation?
That seems to be the greatest miscarriage of justice in this case.

The best reasoning I've heard for this that it is a Casino town so a tourist on tourist crime going to trial and taking up court time sees no actual long term benefit to the community that the DA and Sheriff are serving there. Get him charged, get it on the books, get him out of town.

I think this is whats wrong with the NFL in today's society. You don't hear about any NHL players abusing their wifes. All that money and fame has gone to their heads.

Just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist in the NHL too
