It is still illegal, as evidenced in this case, where one could argue that since this “doll” is a creation, that no child is being harmed but still is enough for charges to be laid.

I've been in like a ten year long discussion with some friends about artificial child pornography, and whether it could or should be used in a "harm reduction" model for pedophiles.

There are some studies - inconclusive though - that suggest that there is an inverse relationship between the availability of "rape" porn and incidences of sexual assault in different jurisdictions. The theory being that there is an outlet for those impulses. (Of course the inverse theory is that the availability of this type of pornography actually increases the incidences of violent sexual assault - evidence doesn't seem to back this up though.)

Because pedophilia seems to be as intractable a mental illness as you can get, the hypothesis is that artificial child pornography could save some children from being preyed on by pedophiles or from being used in the making of this type of pornography.

But the thought of anybody watching child pornography - even the artificial kind - is disgusting. We never get anywhere, but for some reason it's been an ongoing and very heated discussion.

How many adults with porn addiction develop healthy concepts of actual adult relationships, including sex and boundaries? Does it make it easier? or more difficult?

I can see the reasoning in theory, but I would be surprised if access to AI generated pornography helped anyone with that mental illness more than it hurt.

Personally, I don’t think people who produce child pornography would be all that swayed by being able to produce it without actual children. I think the actual children part is the appealing part to them, so I can’t see how it would curb that abuse.

Yeah, regardless of whether it was proven to completely eliminate the abuse of children, no lawmaker will even consider amending any existing laws for fear of the repercussions or being labeled as a pedophile-lover or something.

Yeah, definitely more of an intellectual exercise than an actual policy discussion. Real policy discussion falls somewhere between "we should lock pedos up for life" and "maybe we should reintroduce the death penalty". The more realistic discussion centers around what to do with confirmed pedophiles and sex offender lists, etc.
