Don't get all the moaning about "losing him for nothing"
6 years ago, Gaudreau signed a contract for $40.5M. He was fantastic for those six years, and the Flames fans and organization got full value out of that contract. Given how good the team was in his final year, you'd have to be nuts to mortgage his last year for some piddly picks.

Anyone who views things objectively and without flames jammies on gets called debbie downer. But it never stops reality from setting in all the same. This was always gonna happen, it's bad news in the moment, oh well.
The good news for the people that deluded themselves into thinking this was gonna play out any other way is long term this is actually good for the franchise's chances of really pushing through to the next level. We'll rebuild, won't be tied to a depreciating star that was never able to deliver playoff success in his prime on RFA contracts. Yeah it'll suck for a bit, for sure the next few years, but then things will turn around and i'd say maybe 2-3 seasons from now you'll all be breathing a sigh of relief and wondering at how you could have been so caught up in that player. We saw the limit of the Gaudreau era here, time to move on before commit to spending another 8 years going nowhere.

The fact ownership ever let Tre start the season without a clear message to both agents that the Flames would not be left with nothing is a monumental failure.
|
So... you trade 2/3rds of the best line in hockey last season at the trade deadline?

He should have had the balls to be up front about this a year ago if this was his intent, he screwed the team by delivering this news 6 hours before free agency.
|
and when he didn't, management should have moved on. It wasn't like we had years of playoff success with the current core. The easy decision was to not put the org in this situation in the first place and start looking at moving him for assets, but BT as per usual, smartest guy in the room, didnt have the balls to pull it off and has crippled this org moving forward.
Goodluck Johnny out east.

Wellness check on Dissentowner. I guess his 1% chance of Johnny not re-signing came true. Hope he bought a lottery ticket.

If he signs, makes it difficult for him to be traded with an extension, so he may wait.

Yeah.....who needs a guy who since entering the league is top 25 in scoring?
Under any circumstance.

The tweets are very different. Testing free agency is different to not coming back to Calgary. Best of luck, hope he gets lots of points to a team that doesn't challenge us

I was prepared to be in the fire treliving camp but the way this played out am more angry at Johnny.
|
Treliving should have imposed an earlier deadline from his side. He could have flushed out Johnny's motivations a month ago by setting a deadline and being clear that if it a deal wasn't reached by then he would end negotiations, start to allocate the money elsewhere and move on.
