I mean, if the Flames are able to get both Tarasenko and Kyrou in a deal for Tkachuk, it's not unreasonable that they can run it back with a similarly-structured lineup as they had last year.
I think it's hardly a given that the Blues are willing to part with both in that trade, but they're certainly going to have to make some kind of monetary concession to fit Tkachuk under the cap.
I really do wonder if this turns into a three-team deal. But a Flames team with both Kyrou and Tarasenko would be extremely formidable. Tarasenko is a terrific player.

If Kyrou is available, I think you pursue a package including him over a package of exclusively firsts. I think you can get a package including both Kyrou and a first.
Maybe you eventually sell one of Tanev and Toffoli if you're on the bubble at the deadline. Then you can head into the 2023 draft with as many as three firsts while still maintaining a strong, young core that's still in a position to be dismantled for more futures if things go south from there.

he was also unprotected in the expansion draft and is a UFA at seasons end
lol
Quality cap dump if you like...who else are they gonna move to make room?
Well a "cap dump" would be someone like Justin Faulk. I bet they could get good assets back for Tarasenko after the year he had, certainly at the deadline if nothing else. A contender would give up a first and more for him at 50% .
if the Flames got Kyrou and Tarasenko and then signed Klingberg, i bet they finish top 3 in division.
They'd finish 1st or 2nd I think.
As IS they have a strong chance at 3rd imo. It's not a strong division. Your biggest competitor for 3rd in the pacific is likely... Vancouver. Maybe LA. Not exactly frightening.

For what it's worth — I would be very surprised if Tarasenko waived to come here.
I think it's way more likely that we see a three-team deal, where the Blues get Tkachuk, an unnamed other team lands Tarasenko, and the Flames land Kyrou plus futures from both other teams.

Zadorov will butter him up.

CGY trades Tkachuk for Kyrou, Neighbours, Bellows, Kostin, and a 1st
NYI trades a 2nd and Bellows for Tarasenko
STL trades Kyrou, Tarasenko, Neighbours, Kostin, and a 1st for Tkachuk and a 2nd
-
Kostin and Bellows are essentially lottery tickets. They're 23 and 24 and haven't done much in the NHL but have some minor potential. But they're also the type of pieces we see thrown into deals like these.
At the bones of it, it's the Islanders getting Tarasenko for a relative discount and the Blues giving up the widely speculated Kyrou/Neighbours/1st package for Tkachuk.

Elias for a boat anchor and multiple 1sts. Ideally from a team with two 1sts in 2023.
If Toffoli costs you a 1st + 2nd then Lindholm easily can get 1st + 1st + boat anchor
Edit: I also want to say this, I don't envy Brad Treliving and Management. There are so many directions the Flames can take with this whole situation, but it essentially has to be a retool OR rebuild.
Retool. Burn and Turn. Take advantage of the Tkachuk capital and go big game hunting. I'm talking your Barzals, Marners, Points, or Pastraks. Pure hockey trade. Maybe make another flashy move. This is still a talented group of hockey players, but you're essentially 2 stars away from winning the division and mean muggin teams in the playoffs again. Maybe they get one more crack at it.
OR
Rebuild. Scored Earth. Sell huge on your Tkachuks, Lindholms and Hanifins. Melt down the team into high quality potential. I'm talking your Kyrous, Caulfields, Bratts, or Krebbs. Kids who have a season or two in the show. Gamble on some youth, and keep good teachers like Backs, Toffoli, or Tanev.
It's a huge decision to make, and I hope Brad goes for it. What ever you decide, do not half ass it.
