Not a bad idea. I doubt he would flee back to Russia with that salary either. The length of the contract and AAV are decent.

Team burn it down.

I spent a little time scrolling capfriendly to look for overpaid players on various teams and I came up with a small list of people we could trade Lindholm for, with the assumption that we would also be getting some pretty good picks / prospects.

The idea was similar contracts, less production for picks & or prospects involved. Not a thorough list but a starting point if we are to consider trading players for downgrades / picks. While I'd like to see a tear down I realize that up and coming players are going to have to learn from established players in the first few years. So getting players back, even if they are considerably worse is something that I value in trades.

Elias Lindholm 27yrs, 2 until UFA 4.85:

Mantha (Wsh). 27yrs 2yrs 5.7m. Injuries have taken their toll and even while healthy he doesn't produce enough to justify his contract. I think we could get a 1st + 2nd maybe + for Lindholm, plus the return when we flip him at his UFA trade deadline. Washington gets a center who can help them through their injury woes and a far better fwd who saves them almost a mil.

Nyquist (Cbj) 5.5m 1yr. Decent 50pt winger, decent 2 way but nothing remarkable. Saves cbj 750k, gives them better options through out their top 6 if they trade for Lindholm. No idea what they'd consider adding to such a trade, but has immediate chemistry w/ the new guy. They may need their pieces to open up more cap space for Laine.

Olofsson (buf) 4.75, 2 yrs. No where near a good a Lindy, similar contract. I don't know what Buffalo is trying to do right now, but they would def. need to add + to this to make it worthwhile.

Sam Reinhart (Fla) 6.5, 2 yrs. He actually had a great season last year and they may be loathe to move him. But with 1.7m in cap savings and a better 2 way player in the mix they might consider it. Probably not much in draft or prospect extras if we made this trade.

Mike Hoffman (Mtl) 4.5, 2yr. Scoring winger who does little else. Not even that good at scoring recently. Montreal would have to include a big add for any trade to work, as Lindholm would give them a better scorer, better 2 way player and let them out of a pretty bad contract.

Elias for a boat anchor and multiple 1sts. Ideally from a team with two 1sts in 2023.

I’m thinking we might actually make some moves with Toronto and Vegas. Toronto needs a few more players you can score, and defend. Vegas is still close to being a playoff team, they just need a couple pieces. I bet we see something big happen.

I would look for a one year burn and turn, and to do that you want to keep players like Lindholm, Dube, Mangiapane, Andersson, Tanev (mentorship!), Kylington... in order to hit the ground running the following year. They all fit an age bracket that would support a new core.

A minor youth movement (one or two breakout players fingers crossed), with big game hunting using the 11M+ cap the following year.

But do you really want to help either of those teams?

Does any self-respecting man?

The return would have to be impossible to turn down.

I hear ya. But we’ve made moves with the oilers..

When I say “we”, I mean not us, we wouldn’t do that. Brad Treliving made trades with them.

OK and if teams aren't willing to give that? You might get an unprotected first from a team that is nowhere near the bottom, or a 2024 unprotected. Any team that has a remote chance of a lottery pick won't give it up.

So we say this stuff is a no go but we agree a deal has to be made right? So which is it? If you can't get a 2023 unprotected first you keep Tkachuk?

Not specific to the unprotected piece, but if we legitimately are getting garbage offers (in either a rebuild or retool scenario), I say we hold onto Tkachuk. This will make both sides sweat a little and sell him during the season/deadline.

Yup, if they are getting crap offers than they will get the same value at trade deadline. I wouldn't be mad if they held onto him if the trade value isn't there.

Would be nice to see Monahan traded to Toronto (salary retained), he does have a park named after him in Brampton after all. Mid round pick if possible.

I think with Monahan we wait & see how his year goes.

- If he really bounces back it ups his value as a rental at the deadline.

- If he doesn't really, someone may still want him for some depth at the deadline, and the value/return is probably no different than now.

- Option C is the longshot that maybe he decides to re-sign long term to help lead a rebuild/retool with Lindy.... doubt it but who knows.

Wont be Panthers because they are at the cap this year and have to sign Huberdeau for next year.

Wont be Knights because they are in the same division are at the cap and have already given away Pacioretty to get to where they are.

Stars are going to be tough to do. They have the cap room but need to sign Oettinger.
Maybe the best you could look at would be Radek Faksa to help them with the salary issue. You need to get Wyatt Johnson as the prospect back. And then a 2023 first round pick, which if top 3 protected becomes a 2024 first round pick unprotected and a third round pick.

Predators can make it happen but I think that they would like to remove some cost as well. They most likely would like to dump Johansen but they might also be willing to change that to Granlund. For the Flames it would work with Granlund for three more years even given his age. For Johansen the Predators would need to hold onto $3-4M of his contract or have to really up the ante on the trade proposal. If they won't eat the cap than you can probably get Glass thrown into the deal as well. The prospect for Nashville that I like is Fedor Svechkov but am also a fan of L'Heureux. Along with prerequisite first round pick that probably will have the protection clause that I mentioned above.

Blues have the best chance at Tkachuk because they don't have to pay more to get rid of salary, especially if they are looking to move Tarasenko in a separate deal. Blues are tight on cap but removing Tarasenko and then Kyrou in the deal to the Flames will help them fit in Tkachuk. Which means that the best the Flames could do on top of this is probably a prospect. I would look at Jake Neighbors as the prospect, but would also be okay with Zachary Bolduc.

Flames have almost no leverage in trade talks so I doubt it gets much more beyond this level. I actually doubt that the Flames can come away with a package as good as these.

Flames have no leverage ?

We are talking a 24 year old 100 point player

31 other teams would love to have him. Sure there are issues - It needs to be a team he will sign long term with - but unless that list is 1 the offers will be strong

Imagine if he wasn’t a Flames the offers people would be thinking up on this message board for him

I wonder if any contender would be ok signing Tkachuk for one year, just add a bit more grit and drive for the playoffs.

A team like Florida comes to mind, since they could have used Tkachuk in the playoffs last year…I know they have no cap space, but they might be able to trade some pieces

Almost no leverage.

If he has given the Flames five teams that he will sign long term than those five are really the only ones that will provide anything of value. Two of the five are not realistic because of cap issues (FLO/VEG). Two of the other three will need to move cap costs out to make it possible (DAL/NAS). The last one is probably his preferred landing spot so they can wait a year and get his for nothing (STL).

If the Flames want to move him and have to move him they are negotiating from a position of weakness. Hence they have limited leverage.

So the reported 5 teams list has been debunked already. Seravalli did say it’s not a big group of teams, but that the list of 5 teams that was circulating is incorrect (Francis also noted this).

At the end of the day, Tkachuk is a top-10 to top-15 player in today’s NHL. He’s going to get a good return.
