Yep, I think democracy is dead here in Alberta. I do not believe that the UCP will transfer power if they lose the election. And the UCP is going to get away with this as the people of Alberta are too milktoast to resist.

You guys are all over-reacting. Parties are still allowed to use the colour blue in their branding. For now.

AI Overview:

In Canadian trademark law, "distinctive" means a mark that actually or is adapted to distinguish a business's goods/services from others; it must function as an identifier, not just a description (like "cold ice cream").

“Conservative” is just a description.

Maybe the new Conservative party should also use the slogan Strong and Free everywhere, and then the UCP can argue in court that only they are permitted to use the slogan they put on Alberta license plates, which really amounts to free political advertising on every vehicle.

I figure Alberta Party can run ads that say, "Vote for the Alberta Party, the new progressive conservatives. "

The UCP has given themselves the power to decide who gets on the ballot, and the ability to decide what recalls are valid, instituted ADAP, stripped Albertans of their rights repeatedly,. So logically I can see no reason to trust the UCP or that they have any respect for democracy.

I like Rakhi and I am really glad that the NDP this time around has a number of strong members in the party because they are going to need many hands to fix everything the UCP has done. Also, if one likes Rakhi then it is good to remember that she shut down her leadership bid immediately to throw her support behind Nenshi.

Looking at his "baggage", at the city level Nenshi (and every mayor ever) had a problem because he was just a single vote on a council that often did not align with his agenda as Mayor, but then he had to wear everything the city did because he had the mayor title. Even if he wanted to collaborate with everyone there was no obligation for the councilors to go along with it and it often put them at odds with each other.

But the biggest thing from his time at Mayor (in my opinion) was the fact that he could not be bought off - to the point that there was a failed plot to entrap him in a bribery scheme. I cannot think of very many modern Albertan politicians who are so loudly confirmed to not take bribes or to be such a stalwart against corporate agendas that they felt the need to concoct a plot to have him removed.

If you prioritize an ethical politician who won't take bribes, then Nenshi is your candidate.

I think Nenshi is really rising to the moment in being a "team politician". Now that he is in a different political system where he can have trusted teammates it is interesting to watch him interact with them. He is often happy to let a member of his team take over the microphone and give them time to deliver a strong message. No one talks about the "smartest guy in the room" thing anymore and I think that is because he has people around him that he can trust to share the work with.

If he keeps promoting his team like this going into an election, I think he will be able to allow each MLA to run their own riding unlike the last election where we saw "Notley" signs dominate in every riding.

Also, Nenshi has won 3 elections in Calgary (and lost 0). I think that track record outweighs the emotional perceptions that some people invoke when they think about Nenshi has mayor.

Nenshi shining a light on the CorruptCare scandal as the government is cancelling the contract that Mentzelopoulos said shouldn't happen.

I wonder how this may influence Mentzelopoulos' lawsuit.

It makes you wonder how many of those trolls are Canadian or if they are even human.

Rant: I still think Canada should block Twitter and Meta from our internet (and Fox news from our TVs). We would be far better served by building Canadian alternatives to the public townhall platforms that prioritizes facts over money, people over bots, and allows Canadians to have discussions and share information without getting drowned out by America.
