They arent going to worry about constitutional, they can just notwithstanding it
Yep, I think democracy is dead here in Alberta. I do not believe that the UCP will transfer power if they lose the election. And the UCP is going to get away with this as the people of Alberta are too milktoast to resist.
In Canadian trademark law, "distinctive" means a mark that actually or is adapted to distinguish a business's goods/services from others; it must function as an identifier, not just a description (like "cold ice cream").
You guys are all over-reacting. Parties are still allowed to use the colour blue in their branding. For now.
Maybe the new Conservative party should also use the slogan Strong and Free everywhere, and then the UCP can argue in court that only they are permitted to use the slogan they put on Alberta license plates, which really amounts to free political advertising on every vehicle.
I figure Alberta Party can run ads that say, "Vote for the Alberta Party, the new progressive conservatives. "
The UCP has given themselves the power to decide who gets on the ballot, and the ability to decide what recalls are valid, instituted ADAP, stripped Albertans of their rights repeatedly,. So logically I can see no reason to trust the UCP or that they have any respect for democracy.
Rakhi should be NDP leader - Nenshi carries too much Mayor of Calgary baggage.
The NDP must carry Calgary.
I like Rakhi and I am really glad that the NDP this time around has a number of strong members in the party because they are going to need many hands to fix everything the UCP has done. Also, if one likes Rakhi then it is good to remember that she shut down her leadership bid immediately to throw her support behind Nenshi.
Looking at his "baggage", at the city level Nenshi (and every mayor ever) had a problem because he was just a single vote on a council that often did not align with his agenda as Mayor, but then he had to wear everything the city did because he had the mayor title. Even if he wanted to collaborate with everyone there was no obligation for the councilors to go along with it and it often put them at odds with each other.
But the biggest thing from his time at Mayor (in my opinion) was the fact that he could not be bought off - to the point that there was a failed plot to entrap him in a bribery scheme. I cannot think of very many modern Albertan politicians who are so loudly confirmed to not take bribes or to be such a stalwart against corporate agendas that they felt the need to concoct a plot to have him removed.
If you prioritize an ethical politician who won't take bribes, then Nenshi is your candidate.
I think Nenshi is really rising to the moment in being a "team politician". Now that he is in a different political system where he can have trusted teammates it is interesting to watch him interact with them. He is often happy to let a member of his team take over the microphone and give them time to deliver a strong message. No one talks about the "smartest guy in the room" thing anymore and I think that is because he has people around him that he can trust to share the work with.
If he keeps promoting his team like this going into an election, I think he will be able to allow each MLA to run their own riding unlike the last election where we saw "Notley" signs dominate in every riding.
Also, Nenshi has won 3 elections in Calgary (and lost 0). I think that track record outweighs the emotional perceptions that some people invoke when they think about Nenshi has mayor.

Conservative trolls are swamping social media with how bad Mayor Nenshi was.
It makes you wonder how many of those trolls are Canadian or if they are even human.
Rant: I still think Canada should block Twitter and Meta from our internet (and Fox news from our TVs). We would be far better served by building Canadian alternatives to the public townhall platforms that prioritizes facts over money, people over bots, and allows Canadians to have discussions and share information without getting drowned out by America.
Preventing another party from calling themselves "conservative" all guarantees the UCP will win the next election. I'm sorry but I have absolutely zero confidence that rural Albertans and people in SE Calgary are smart enough vote for their own interests if the sign isn't blue. Let's hope this gets stopped in the courts immediately but I have very little faith
Really? I've heard on this board for months that the NDP changing their name wouldn't matter in the least, so I find it odd that this would make a difference.

To be fair it’s just like one guy who says it over and over again.

An Alberta judge says a proposed referendum question on Alberta separating from Canada is unconstitutional, in a decision given less than 24 hours after the provincial government introduced legislation that would have ended the court proceeding.
Once Bill 14 came into force, the court action would have been discontinued, preventing Court of King's Bench Justice Colin Feasby from issuing a decision, even though several days of arguments had already been presented.

The judge called the move to change the legislation antithetical to the rule of law and democracy.
"The public is entitled to the fruits of this process that has been conducted largely at their expense so that if they are asked to vote on Alberta independence, they have a tool that may help them make sense of the legal dimensions of the secession of Alberta from Canada."
Feasby noted that the court case had been prioritized at the expense of other justice system participants waiting for their cases to be heard.
"Alberta’s cavalier disregard for court resources and lack of consideration for the parties and First Nations intervenors who participated in this proceeding in good faith is disappointing to say the least."

TODAY, Court of King’s Bench, after hearing submissions from First Nations, ruled that the separatists’ (Alberta Prosperity Project) proposed referendum question is unconstitutional. It violates all Albertans Charter and First Nations’ treaty rights.
"Legislating to pre-emptively end this court proceeding disrespects the administration of justice," he said in the Calgary Court of King's Bench on Friday.

Alberta’s argument is not just wrong, it is dishonourable. The Justice Minister cannot stand in the Legislative Assembly in May citing CIA s 2(4) as a protection for Treaty rights and then send his lawyers into Court in November to make a technical argument that CIA s 2(4) is not protection for Treaty rights. Reconciliation demands that governments do better than this.
Coincidence that the government is suddenly going to pass legislation making the Justice Minister immune from Law Society regulation?
