Great trade for the Flames because no futures are given up and we got better. Nick Ritchie is an everyday starter. He's the rich man's Brett Ritchie and can play up the lineup a little bit. Stetcher is much more of an NHLer than Mackey, and I did not see Mackey's potential at all when he played.

They didn't get big adds, but they got an add.

Now that we still have our 1st and 2nd round picks I get to do some draft research without thinking I'm wasting my time and the team gets a subtle pat on the back of belief to go make it happen.

I'll be cheering for wins.

You?

If you don't want to sell, so be it. I don't agree with that logic at all when you desperately need to make changes if you hope that next year is better, but further clogging up the roster with very meh players (that likely have no future here) coming from one of the worst teams in the league just seems like more of the same that has put the team in the position it finds itself in now.
How does trading a forward and a defenseman for another forward and a defenseman 'clog up the roster'?

Agreed…. and I hate it.

If the flames did nothing and let the team carry on with their current trend, they could have gotten a a top10-12 pick.

I’m not keen on cheering on the team for a 9th in the conference finish here. Just seems dumb to me at this stage.

Stetcher was one of LA's best players against the Oilers last playoffs. Might be too late but it's a good move

I am good either way as long as it’s consistent.

One win one loss sucks cause there is no benefit in that at this point

Stetcher can at least move the puck the right way. So that's a little bit of a Kylington level addition there.

More I think about adding Nick the more I think it's going to really set itself. We will see. I want as high a draft pick as possible but over the last decade of Flames Fandom, I've learned to operate my expectations in the box they operate in.

Anyone that thinks this team was going to slide down the standings over the last 20 games is in dreamland. Look at their schedule. They are going to finish 8th, 9th, or 10th in the west. And this trade will not change that.

But why?

You're dodging the question.

What is the purpose of this trade?

Nick Ritchie is a potential replacement for Lucic next year.

If Stetcher fits in, it provides more depth on the back end for next year (assuming both sides want to sign)

And let's say things go well for the rest of this season, and they find themselves in a playoff spot - this trade makes them better

To test out a Looch replacement and a 6th dman replacement who has bonds with a couple existing team members without it costing a thing and being easy to cut bait. Literally almost zero downside.

Their best pick would be 10 and a long shot at Bedard. They won’t be able to go higher than that but it could go as low as 16th

Has there been a brother for brother deal in the history of the NHL before?

GM doesn't have much to do with that on March 3rd.

This is a "not selling, you guys can still shock the world and make the playoffs, but I'm not trading futures" move

The Ritchie swap was strange but Stecher is a decent pick up and Mackey wasn't going to get much time here anyways.

Not sure the trade requires much more analysis its not franchise altering, just depth guys and no picks or prospects moved which is always a win.
