This is a move you make in January to hopefully stir the drink in the room as a greater than the sum of its parts type of deal. Now it is really insignificant, especially given the time left in the year that it seems completely illogical.

It's too late to materially impact our chances this season. Getting closer to 9th in the west does nothing for our playoff prospects next season and beyond.

a few years ago Mackey and Valimaki were the future for this teams blueline; both are gone, and the current D prospects are thin and at least 2 seasons away. Flames need to add 22-25 year old NHL level blueliners this summer (among many other things)

As Team Canada gets rolling, you get the highlight-reel assist and we’ll get to that, but now that you’ve seen him in practice every day and played with him, do you have a new appreciation for how good Andrew Mangiapane is?

Yeah, he and I got along really, really well.

He didn’t get there until the fourth game of the tournament. All the boys were calling me “Stech” and as soon as he got there he started calling me “Tony,” so all the boys started calling me “Tony.” Obviously, he’d heard it from (Chris) Tanev and Marky (Jacob Markstrom) and (Josh) Leivo in Calgary. Our rooms were right across the hall from one another, so we hung out every night. Yeah, just another guy I made a friendship for life with and he was a huge, huge reason why we won.

Let's say you're right, and they draft 15th instead of 14th - do you think that negatively impacts the franchise? Is it worth whining about? Especially when, in all likelihood, it has no impact on the standings

Mackey was a huge disappointment. Really thought he’d turn out to be decent and he was solid in the AHL, but looked completely overmatched at the NHL level.

Mackey was horrible. Isn't he like the worst d-man in the league?

It demonstrates a lack of forward-thinking by the franchise, even when the chips are down.

Accept your fate, the season's lost, and give some kids a chance down the stretch by casting off some veterans, and probably give yourself a decent shot at sliding into a top-10 draft selection.

You don't need to be on team rebuild to see that direction is most logical at this point, as it still has eyes on winning next season.

I'd say it's worth asking the question why the front office was unwilling to sell anyone off of a massive failure of a season, but instead decided to make a deal like this so late in the season that is has no real chance at doing anything.

If you don't want to sell, so be it. I don't agree with that logic at all when you desperately need to make changes if you hope that next year is better, but further clogging up the roster with very meh players (that likely have no future here) coming from one of the worst teams in the league just seems like more of the same that has put the team in the position it finds itself in now.

I agree, the Flames legitimately improved after this trade.

But this is a lost season. I don't think any team sitting 5 points out at the TDL (and worse if you considers points %) has ever made the playoffs in that same year.

Just lose.
I highly doubt this trade makes the team any better lol

Getting Stetcher is a move to help Mangiapane. Eat Bread has been struggling this year and is good friends with Stetcher. It's not so much a hockey move as it is a mental well being move. Mang needs an extra pick me up and this is it.

Kind of funny that both Valimaki and Mackey ended up in Arizona this season.
