Probably because it was a headshot. And before you even say it wasn't Mangipane had his nose broken on the hit.

And live with Lucic and save a bit of cap and a ton of cash.
Tre was under no illusions of Lucic’s abilities. But may as well take the stinky player who is cheaper.
Lucic is barely an NHL player but he’s actually no worse than Neal.

If you make a trade in season, you make a lesser move and hope that maybe it shakes things up enough to wake guys up. Sometimes a non-core piece can bring a room together (or tear it apart). Look at the 2007 Flames, acquiring Brad Stuart on paper was a huge win, but it is believed that trading Ference messed with chemistry in the room.
I'm not going to make a proposal as I am bad at those, but maybe someone like Jesper Fast from the Rangers.

I think this is the case too. Neal's name was out there for some time and if we know anything about Treliving it is how hard he works the phones. If something better than Lucic was available for Neal, I think he would have taken it.

Seems this team is always missing a few key pieces. You can only build from the goalies out so far before you realize that you also need to get bigger and grittier up on all 4 forward lines.
I'd say to the Flames organization, when it's time to sell, make sure the team tanks fully so you can get at least one of the top two picks. None of this s**t on pride. It's like what Marsellus Wallace says "...That's pride [f'ing] with you. [F***] pride. Pride only hurts. It never helps." I don't say that the Flames try to do what the Oilers did and go 5+years like that to milk the system, but if the team can get the likes of McDavid/Draisaitl or Crosby/Malkin, Ovechkin/Backstrom - I wouldn't feel any shame at all. It's actually more profitable to build around players like those than what we currently have.
|
It took the Oilers over a decade of high picks and 4 lottery wins to get two good players. And they still aren't a good team. There are no guarantees

Based on what isn't working, re-tool for the future. Jettison all pending UFA's and any other non core players like Jankowski and Bennett. Don't try and 'save the season' be smart and re-tool on the fly, even if it means writing off this year

Yeah maybe.
Again...maybe. If so that would indicate he is way overvaluing his players then.
Yup...and that should apply to BT as well. But as you point out, looks like he was unable to see it that way for himself.
I like BT as a GM overall....i think people forget how asset AND NHL player poor this club was when he took over. He has done a LOT of really good work in the last 6 years. I think the scouting has been great, I believe its the most stable the farm team has been in years, his trades for the most part are very good, and without question he is a master negotiator with player agents.
This particular series of events though are as about as bad as it gets for a GM.
He made a big mistake...then he doubled down and made it worse. That has to have the attention of his bosses although it doesnt mean he is in trouble with them. Not with a 2 month old shiny new contract in his hands.
|
I can't agree with the bolded. In the history of the Flames franchise, has a new GM stepped up into a better situation than Treliving did?
Tons of cap space
Some good young players
Extra draft picks
Low initial expectations, giving him freedom to trade away vets for futures
Control over timing as to when hire "his" coach

Change nothing, tank hard and bring on that top 5 pick! Sell off UFA’s at the deadline, and then possibly trade Johnny in the offseason! A re-tool is possible but a rebuild may be required.

Two things need to happen to the roster to bring it back to life IMO. Get a Center to replace Janko. Get one RW. Fill those two holes and bam, back in business. Janko can go try for a spot elsewhere. I'm so jaded about him. He was so promising not even 8 months ago. Ugh, makes me sick I've come think so lowly of Janko after all the years of following his development.

Replacing the 4th line centre and getting a RW ( I am assuming Patrick Kane isn’t available for scraps and some cap dumps) isn’t changing the fortunes of the team.
Although the fortunes could likely change basically doing nothing, that’s the parity of the NHL these days.

Yeah it is disheartening but it’s better than being in denial and thinking this core can win anything. I’d rather tear it down and rebuild, especially before the expansion draft.

A new owner. After decades of consistent inconsistency, the revolving door of middle grade GM's and coaches, the lack of leadership on the ice and in the room, the never ending signing of washed up has beens from losing teams-the cycle just never seems to end.

Frolik and Jankowski own the 2 most glaring holes in the forward roster. There is no point in talking about Lucic as his spot is basically cemented and taken.
Improve what you can improve. And those 2 spots are an extremely low bar to hurdle when it comes to improvement.
We almost got Kadri for the exact thing. Almost got Zucker for that exact thing. They didnt happen. But it's clear as day to anyone that those 2 spots have been targeted since the first day of the off season. And they're still the two things to work on. Forget everything else and complete the original task that was set out.

Sorry Bingo, I thought those deals were fair when signed. I don’t think they’re value deals this year. And if the performance continues beyond this year they’re below value. This is the problem this year. Have these guys driven wins?

Na, most of those are value deals. Hanifin definitely isn’t, fair market if you’re being optimistic.
That said, it’s very funny to me that he points to us having a good regular season last year and then getting absolutely caved in the playoffs as an example of this being a winning team. Some of you are so impressed with mediocrity it makes me cringe. Have the cheerleaders here ever actually cheered for a good team in any sport?

I really hope the Flames are thinking long term. I just dont see this team being a move or two away. I think they need to take a step or two back and move forward. We have a bunch of UFAs we can trade at the deadline and then in the off season can make a big trade or two. I'm fine with just waiting this season out.
