McDavid is just flashy, that doesn't always transmit to the NHL game and sometimes it does. One thing I'll say about McDavid though is he always wants to win, just like bennett. That is one of the biggest intagibles these days as the skill level between players isn't the same as it used to be (even from 2001-now)

are you talking about casual fans or actual fans that post on boards like this?
because as the Hobey Baker winner, a kid that led them to the National Championship and a kid that lit it up at the WJC, I am pretty sure that there were plenty of Oiler fans that knew who Gaudreau was...
Oiler fans were salivating over Morrison, a virtual unknown from Western Michigan, so i am pretty sure that many knew who johnny gaudreau was...

Only thing that would make this good is if MacT was named the new head coach of the Oilers.

We in a 2 year span the Flames went out and got Wideman, Russell, and Engelland as FAs (Russell was an RFA, but his free agent & waiver status drove that trade). I think it would be hard to argue that all three of those guys aren't playing quality top 4 minutes right now. The Flames were also able to pick up on Waivers Schlemko and trade for Smid who would both arguably be a big upgrade most of the Oilers defenders.

Is there a website that would list all of chiarelli's moves as Bruins GM?
We know the Seguin trade was awful and that the Bruins have had cap problems for the last couple years, but has he made other mistakes? Did he win the cup based solely on the signing of Chara, or did he make other good moves to get them there?
As long as edmonton doesn't pick up a Chara equivalent for free, they still have a long way to go to even be a playoff team.

Isn't that pretty much admitting that they kept the inept management and made minimal moves to give them the best shot at McDavid? So this this "plan" go into effect after the October issue of the sportsnet magazine in 2013?

More Casual fans. Even some hardcore fans from Edmonton I've talked to before this season didn't know who Gaudreau was. Even those who did know who he was ragged on him for being too small and "his game wont translate" ect. Nobody but the most hardcore Flames fans thought he would do anything. Those of us who watched the past 2-3 years of training camp knew he had the skills and were salivating for him to come into the line-up but most casual fans in Calgary had no idea who he is. Bring up the name Connor McDavid and every casual fan seems to think he is the next big thing because that's what the medias told them. McDavid will be a good player but he is not the do all end all to win a cup.

IMO, this only puts the train back on the tracks. We shall see if it can continue on a reasonable course. I agree this team is likely not going to be in the playoffs next season. But 22-24 ranking should be reasonable, no?
Connor Mcdavid is good, but he's not dragging the team to a cup.

I'm sure if they want a Wideman at $6.5M or Engelland at $3M ("NHL inflation"), then yes they could. Remember Wideman was pretty much a borderline bottom pairing defenseman last year, Engelland is a bottom pairing defenseman (and still is) that is subbing into the top 4 (and quite admirably might I add), Schlemko has been an amazing pickup but his body of work is small and was waivers material a few months ago, and Russell is a rare but classic case, but also benefited from a successful system set by Gio/Brodie.
I don't see a Gio/Brodie setting the system, nor do I see the top 4 D available for the Oilers to sign as UFA unless they are willing to sign Mike Green for $7M for 6 years, Ehrhoff for $4M, et al. If they are willing to blow their cap on borderline 2nd pairing defenseman for long, heavy contracts, then sure. They will be closer to Wideman/Engelland type dollars and signings. Good, young, puck moving, top 4 D get locked up early and for 5-6 years for a very good reason - they just don't see UFA anymore. You got to trade for them, find a diamond in the rough or if you get extremely lucky (see: NYI) one might be caught in a cap pinch and have to trade one, but (ironically enough) the team that did seem like they would get caught in a pinch, Boston with Torey Krug, managed to sneak in a 1 year contract, so I don't see them being available.

While I think Chiarelli is a good executive, I not sure if I'm a fan of combining the job/roles of President & GM. Where is the separation and accountability. Feels like they traded one "old boys" regime for another.
Even when Burke was on his own (after Feaster), he set about to hire himself a GM to handle the duties. Will Chiarelli's focus be on improving the team, or consolidating power and control under his watch. I don't know but are there other organizations structured this way in the NHL? Do good organizations do this combo role, or does EDM have to do this because it can't attract the talent at that executive level. (kind of like overpaying for a UFA).

The issue with Chiarelli isn't just his mistakes, but also the fact that pretty much the entire Bruins cup winning core was in the organization before he actually started the job. Bergeron, Krejci, and Thomas were all in the organization well before him, and Rask, Kessel (which turned into Seguin and Hamilton), Lucic, Marchand, and Chara were all brought in after he'd agreed to the job but before he'd actually taken over duties. Interim GM Jeff Gorton handled all of those acquisitions.
How much influence did he have on those moves? Well technically he wasn't allowed contact with the Bruins' organization and was specifically barred from any draft discussions until mid-July so Chara is probably the only one you could attribute to him, and even then, Chiarelli has noted how he found out about the signing while watching TV from the Senators' war room on July 1st.
Doesn't mean he's not a good GM, but he certainly didn't build that Bruins team and he made some brutal mistakes near the end.

i think that's my point tho; a lot of people here were very excited because of his track record at lower levels of hockey...
but there was definitely doubt about whether Guadreau's game would translate to the NHL, thus the trepidation with some fans and critics
McDavid is universally hyped - the likelihood of him being a bust is pretty low...What's the worse case scenario for him? A Sean Monahan? That's our best player...
Oilers will be in the playoffs in two years imo.

Oilers need to do many things before those kinda predictions come true, one forward no matter how good doesn't make up 30 some points in the standings
You can't win without good D and goal tending

CMD may be good, but in the new NHL, you need to have 2-way D that can help move the puck and create odd man rushes. The most obvious is how much of an effect Gio/Brodie and Russell/Wideman (and even Schlemko now) have, or last night when Vancouver activated their D and it was a night and day difference.
Look at the last Jesus (Crosby) - how effective is him and Malkin when all their pucking moving D got injured? They couldn't get anything started worth a damn. If Edmonton can't get CMD the puck, he'll just be a neutered superstar - and they got short period of time where they need to find 3-4 (depending on Nurse).
