Not sure about that. Smith is one who has struggled with the change and he is 6' 5". Goalie's equipment was very very small compared to now.

That's another thing that's so great about this season: the play of the younger guys. From the heroics of the first line to the emergence of Andersson, Kylington,Tkachuk, Valimaki and to an extent Bennett & Jankowski, there's a lot to be excited about beyond this year.

Imagine if flames won against Montreal and Boston. I don't meant to hop on the dog pile, but that's 4 points! …could have been 71!

What I really like about Sam Bennett is that this last off-season he stopped stressing about being a first line center and instead asked himself

“What can I become that this team really needs?”

“A lunatic!”

And has played the part to devilish ends.

Trade Sam Bennett??!?

I said to my buddies that if Ryan gets that backhand through, Gio scores.
Beast mode for Ryan to win the game for us in the 3 play sequence, pass, draw penalty, assist on the PP goal.

I know Mike Smith is the new CP whipping boy and it’s trendy to rip him, but much of this criticism is beyond ridiculous. None of the goals against tonight were blatantly soft and he had a decent game for a backup. Just to recap:

Goal 1: Shot through traffic on a 5-on-3, save-able but not a sure thing.
Goal 2: Redirected by Gio 6 feet from the crease, no chance.
Goal 3: Green undressing Brodie then scoring with a nice backhand. Pretty tough save when a guy is allowed to cut into the slot like that.
Goal 4: Entirely the fault of Gaudreau and Monahan getting too cute in the offensive zone, turning the puck over, and coasting on the backcheck to allow Larkin into the zone uncovered. Defensive fire drill all around.

In summary, Smith played about as well as you’d expect a backup to play in a game where the Flames had far too many defensive breakdowns. They’re lucky to have the scoring to win these games with poor team defence.

Doing the one thing he still does better than most goaltenders, I assume.

I’m not sure why him playing the puck is an issue. Usually a smart play to get it out of the zone.

^ I will never criticize JG SM and Lindy for being too cute, certainly not this season.
They want to score first and foremost and they want to score with style secondarily.

That sort of cuteness by looking to score with style keeps the defenders on their toes as they have no idea any given shift over the course of the game if any of them are going to attempt a shot, deke, pass, or have them make multiple passes....which means that even the regular basic shot from one of them has a better chance of going in as the goalie and defenders are are second guessing at best, totally lost and totally clueless at worst as where the puck is going while in Edm.

It’s usually not the pursuant play, it’s the disruption to the forecheck

It's not a ton, but since NYE, Neal has 5 points in 9 games. Not great stats, but more Neal like. He also has 4 in his last 4.

I just watched the game.

Thought Smith played admirably despite allowing four. Definitely no trademark Smith Softies, He got beat by two excellent shots, plus a deflection and a poorly played rush by our top pairing. Gio has to cut that pass to Larkin off, absolutely.

Bennett was good. I still think the answer is to move him to 3C and put a winger, maybe Mangiapane, with him and Neal. Even though Bennett, Neal, and Jankowski had great games on special teams, they just don't work as a line 5v5.

Liked Kylington's game. Showed a lot of escapability and strong decision making under pressure.

Brodie took some bad penalties and got walked on a scoring play, but I also didn't think he was necessarily bad.

Gio didn't have his best night but still scored the tying goal. What a beauty and a half.

That Lindholm-Gaudreau-Monahan goal was magical. This is that line on a bad night?

PP1 struggled yet PP2 pots three with every single guy on PP2 picking up at least one PP point. Can't ask for more. Anderson's point shot on the first Bennett goal and the general quality of zone entries were a breath of fresh air.

Tkachuk got robbed a few times, thought he played well. Backlund made a nice pass to Tkachuk. I think he will benefit from the reduced ice time from being taken off PP2. Frolik was kinda meh.

4th line is hit or miss. They don't seem to have much chemistry offensively but I kind of like them. Ryan had a strong game on special teams but I still think his best fit is on line four. Hathaway had some moments and so did Eatbread, but as a line these three don't quite click. Better your fourth line than your third though.

Overall the Flames only scored one 5v5 goal. 5 on 5 continues to be a struggle for this team masked by a ridiculous amount of PP, SH, and EN goals. I'm not trying to be negative - this was an awesome win, but we need more 5v5 scoring throughout the lineup. Maybe it will come after some rest during all star break.

4 points in his last 4 games. I don’t want to get ahead of myself but it feels like James Neal might finally be starting to come around. I’m still a big fan of his so I’m happy to see him get rewarded.

This is the greatest post, I wish I could thank it more than once. I also had to put it to the test.

Here he is, during his short time in Breaking Benjamin:

Smith was good enough. He made a few big saves including one right after the 5-4 go ahead goal. None of the goals against him were terrible. The defence didn’t do him any favours.

GF/GP
2017-18: 2.63, 27th
2018-19: 3.71, 2nd

PP%
2017-18: 16.0%, 29th
2018-19: 23.9%, 8th

simply amazing. What a year.
