How do you help someone with cap space when you don’t have any
It will cost them almost 20M/year, just to sign Tkachuk, Mangi and Kylington

The idea being if you are ripping the bandaid off, not all of these players will be returning

Still they have to figure out what to do with them before getting to that phase

Yeah I think they have to sort out Chucky now before doing anything further.
If Chucky peaces out, then the selling begins. Team didn’t choose that path, but it’s the path they’ll be forced onto.
If Chucky re-signs I’m pretty certain we’ll then see cap dumps and big signings in short order.

I’d see Kylington going the other way if the rumour of Girard being the space is true. Could also see it being Johnson though he’s harder to deal with his MTNC (though also easier in a way since it’s only a one year commitment).
That said, the Flames already have a lot of D signed even without Kylington.

Seravelli paraphrased on the DFO Rundown last week: If Gaudreau doesn't sign in Calgary, Tkachuk will want out as well.
Molberg tweet: same thing. Tkachuk will want out if Gaudreau doesn't re-sign
So I don't know. To me I'm just curious what the return will be. I would guess he hasn't signed the qualifying offer yet because he wants to get his 8 year payday with his team of choice. That or everyone in the media has vastly misjudged Tkachuk and his priorities

Why does everyone assume if we have to trade Tkachuk we have to tear it down? Do you think we are getting nothing back for him? I could even argue if BT plays his cards right he can strengthen the team by addressing other areas of need in that deal. My point is if Tkachuk is traded we don't know if the return takes us toward retooling or it is a hockey deal that gives us assets to win now back.

If Chucky leaves should the Flames maybe stop drafting American players so high? Fox , Johnny, Chucky, who knows with Coronato but he will have the power to being in NCAA. Has to be some lessons learned I would think.

I'm still of the belief you have to draft the best player available.
Look what Fox got us in that trade. Sure I'd prefer a Norris winner but Lindholm might have the best contract in the league.

Fox, 3rd round. Gaudreau, 4th round. Since when is that drafting high?

I can see the jump to that point of view, but if we sign klingberg that changes things. That frees up a top 4 d for trade, in addition to Tkachuk, if that’s how it plays out. Returns for Tkachuk and Hanifin or Andersson would be substantial. Agree with Dissentowner the team could be strong if Treliving plays his cards right.

Calgary acquires:
Matt Stajan
Ian White
Jamal Mayers
Niklas Hagman
Toronto acquires:
Dion Phaneuf
Freddie Sjostrom
Trading Tkachuk to help this roster is a fools errand, but it’s absolutely a Calgary Flames Thing™️ to do.

Dougie Hamilton for Lindholm and Hanifin. Doesn't mean the trade will be bad lol

You would not get that return for one year of Matthew Tkachuk. He would have to sign an extension with the team for them to pay that and I get the feeling he would rather just play out his last year and choose where he plays.

Maybe focus on futures, is what the Phaneuf trade should have been, instead of trading the player for immediate assets. Trade for guys on the cusp, not guys already on the decline. And just a reminder, it was Darryl Sutter who made this trade. Great coach, but a terrible GM.

If someone throws gaudreau money and term at him, he’d be foolish to turn it down.
