Rome wasn’t built in a day - losing Gaudreau resets the clock a bit.

Step 1 - Sign Klingberg. Add a dynamic player to the blue line and signal to Tkachuk they’re not throwing in the towel.

Step 2 - Extend Tkachuk, 8 x $9.76M and name him Captain. A new era begins.

Step 3 - Extend Lindholm at the earliest possible time.

Only Coleman, Andersson and Markstrom are signed for more than 2 years. They have most/all of their picks in the next three years.

A re-tool is entirely possible. Don’t know how advisable it is, but if they’re not blowing it up, at least it’s a plan.

Would Klingberg even want to sign there with Seider and Hronek already there? To me Klingberg makes more sense in either Ottawa or Seattle.

It’s his last contract. He’ll go where he gets the best contract and like to live

I think Sutter maxed out pretty much every player last year. None of the young guys from the farm will add that.

So they have to find a free agent who could add 80 points or so or two free agents who could add 50. Kadri is the only guy left in that category. Unless some of the contenders need to dump salary.

The flames will not be negotiating from a position of strength. Johnny really stuck a stake through Treliving’s heart.
Not 115 and not from one guy

Rodrigues is an intriguing UFA, both him and Milano could be had for cheaper then the bigger names left on the board and could provide some pop to the lineup. Sutter could be the right coach for some of the guys left who could see jumps in production under the checking system Sutter likes to use.

Is it basically just a given Kadri is waiting on Colorado?

Certainly feels that way; if Girard gets dealt we will know for sure. It’ll be interesting to see how long Kads is willing to wait though.

If he want to be on a contender I wonder how he views the Flames right now?

Tkachuk is the Flames linchpin in all this. If he stays we are looking to contend, if he wants out Flames should see the writing on the wall.

I'm betting he views any team not the Avs that can pay him $7-8M or more over 7 years as a contender

We don’t need to clear cap space to sign him so if he wanted to, he could have already. Unless we’re plan C or D or E.

Definitely need to clear space; he most likely sees a long term Tkachuk in Calgary as what would make us contenders and with 18 mill in space with Tkachuk, Mangi and Kylington as RFA’s we still need to figure out and it becomes clear we’d need to move Lucic in order to bring in Kadri. I think for the Flames this is becoming another case of having to wait for their American star who has more leverage than they do which kinda sucks lol.

I know we’d eventuality need to clear cap space, but we *could* sign Kadri today. If he was interested. And that probably does hinge on Tkachuk.

Well, they do, and they also may have a different view of his value in terms of salary than he does. Even if they can clear, say, $8M, they might not think he’s an $8M player.

Yup, losing Tkachuk and Gaudreau would be a rebuild

The Flames should be helping Colorado clear cap space for a sweetener. Just rip the bandaid off already. Don't let it rot.

Well it’s impossible to just magic a 115 point player out of thin air.

They have to completely re-evaluate their offensive strategy, and prepare as though they’re going to be a middle-10 scoring team instead of a top-10 one.

No reason they can’t be top-10 defensively, however, and you can do a lot with that.

They also need to do a bit of asset hoarding in the interim so they can make a proper push for a star via trade when one comes available.
