Coleman -> perhaps?
Andersson -> at $4.55...maybe?
They've got Marky eating a slot for 2 years.
Kadri eating one for 5 years?
Still one there to use on expiring deals or on a massive package.

You want the ability to retain salary as a 3rd team in a trade for a player who never plays for you, so you can’t just look at the current roster.
Locking up a retention slot for next 5 years needs to return value for each of the 5 years you are doing it.

Exactly. And there is very little chance that you would actually get good enough value to warrant doing it

Francis just mentioned three guys who could have requested a trade at the end of the season - Kadri, Weegar and Coleman.
Of those three, the only one who has a legit “this isn’t what I signed up for” gripe is Coleman.
The other two signed here knowing there was a high chance it would fail spectacularly.
So if Coleman is traded at some point, I won’t be suprised.

Kadri does as well. Remember when gaudreau and Tkachuk left and everyone thought Kadri and Huberdeau would make us a better team?
Pepperidge farm remembers.

You're insinuating I would want to buy tickets with no one traded. Save the Kipper jersey retirement night, I was already checked out last season by mid-February-ish.

I don’t know how many people thought we’d be better.
I think it was more “maybe Kadri and Huberdeau can keep us more or less where we were as a consistent playoff team”.
Which was daft then, and daft now, but… you know. Treliving and Edwards.

They've replaced those key players with overaged prospects and reclamation projects..
The last turn off before full tear down was before Markstrom and Mangiapane were shipped. And even then, a quick pivot or retool was questionable.

it's a "pay up" message for sure.
and as for the "full tear down" ... potato, potato. I don't care how the Flames want to label this, the trades speak for themselves.

Outside of Markstrom the Flames have not traded a player who isn’t a pending UFA and they moved Markstrom to get what hopefully is 2 long term pieces and they have a top 5 goalie prospect in hockey. It is a forced tear down because players do not want to sign for what the Flames offered them as they do not want to go long term with older vets but were willing to go 8 years with Lindholm and Hanifin.

Sure, but that 8 year offer was at the beginning of the season. Players said no, team didn't play well, out you go. A forced rebuild is still a rebuild, and is a lot better than actively resisting a rebuild.

It also kills a lot of the benefit of getting short term free agents to sell at the deadline if you have reduced retention spaces.

Trading multiple players that still have term left. Markstrom is the only one fitting that description. And there's multiple reasons why they traded him.

Markstrom was the biggest piece to keep them pretending to be competitive

The Flames should be looking into taking on a bad contract or two for the next two years to gain the most assets possible.
The team literally has 29 million to spend, weaponize this to the max.
