I dont know why you wouldn't trade Kadri if you can get something for him. By the time the team is any good, he'll probably have aged out of being any good and will be a buy out candidate.

Someone please take that off our hands lmao.

They just might if he thinks the situation and location is better. Given the way he played last season I think there will be several takers if the Flames are willing to eat say $2M on that deal.

While I am still annoyed about the circumstances surrounding his signing, I think if he wants to stay, and relishes the mentor role, you keep him.
Unless it’s a ridiculous offer, he is worth more to the future of this team as a mentor, than what we’d get in return.
Young players need solid vets to develop properly.

the retention wouldn't kick in until then anyway - pretty sure they can go ahead

I believe with the way contracts work, any retention would count starting for next year anyway.
Not that we would retain on Kadri.

Tree can have Kadri, for Liljgren and their 1st. No retention.
Otherwise beat it.

I think its nearly a certainty that any team asking on Kadri would require retention. He's also not waiving unless he's going somewhere with a chance to win. That means very little cap room to work with.
What does it matter anyway? Maybe ~$2M on Kadri for 5 years is nothing to this team now and opens the doors for a larger market.

The camp who basically want everyone traded, are you going to still buy tickets this coming season knowing how bad the team is going to be if we trade everyone with any value? Flames could conceivabley as bad as San Jose last season.

Based on the direction? I might buy season tickets.

This team is going to be so bad next year I love it.
I am penciling in Hagens and McKenna in our 2026 opening night lineup.
McKenna - Hagens - Iginla top line
8-0 win over Edmonton with a top line of Perry - Nugget - Kane.

You trade valuable assets that aren't going to be valuable during your contention window and then overpay UFAs on short duration deals to fill out the roster, hopefully being able to move them for assets as rentals when the time comes.
This is how you manage assets and maximize the value you're getting.
There is no time pressure to move a guy like Kadri but if there is a deal that works for the Flames and Kadri then you pull the trigger

What's the difference? It has been far worse buying tickets with the misguided false hope the team has typically been offering for all but 3-4 seasons in the last 15 years?
I have no issue going to games if they tear it down provided they are doing it properly and still have some legitimate players on the roster, which they will.

With only 3 retention slots, I don't love the idea of using one for next 5 seasons unless there is a hell of a return. IMO you would need to get a meaningful asset for each year of retention.
The team looks to be plenty bad enough already. And while you might wish he was gone 4 years from now when you're competitive again, it seems early to be worried about that.
