People get too hung up on top 10 protection. If the Devils finish in the top 10 in 2025 and the pick gets bumped, they are pretty likely to do the same the next year.

But the Devils with Markstrom probably will at least make the POs, so it's moot. And 10OA this year was always a long shot.

The New Jersey Devils announced today that the team has acquired goaltender Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Kevin Bahl and New Jersey’s first-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft (top-10 protected). Calgary will be retaining 31.25% of Markstrom’s remaining contract, which after this season, has two years left on a six-year, $36,000,000 ($6,000,000 average annual value) deal originally signed with the Flames on October 9, 2020. The cap hit for those remaining two years will be $4,125,000. The announcement was made by President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald.

Markstrom is 34 going on 35. This is a pretty good return. I have used the Mike Smith multiple times as an example of what to expect. That got a 3rd we got a 1st top 10 protected whatever and a decent prospect it looks like.

Some people had unrealistic expectations.

This is a great return. Just a 1st would have been great.

The 1st is an acceptable return. I would have loved the 10th OV pick this year but that's always unlikely (especially without full retention or moving pick 41)

But if you can get a top 20 pick next year and Bahl that's still a great return for a guy we thought was unmovable at this time last year.

No. The conditions of the Monahan trade specifically identify Calgary and Florida's picks. They don't reference any other 1sts the Flames may acquire.

I think everyone needs this reminder. He's certainly an NHL goalie but age is becoming a factor and he wont be around when the flames are ready to compete.

It's ok. Not a home run but a decent return.

What happens if they do land in the top 10? I mean at some point something has to convey so I'm wondering what the details on that are?

Isn't that how protection always works (unless they have to jump a year because the pick's gone)?
