How much are you paying for it? Have you had a lot of stuff shipped?

Man, I have so much to buy with my new at par Canadian dollars but I really don't know where to go. Don't fancy a trip since the closest places are like in Idaho or someplace likw Spokane, WA...Ebay's selection doesn't seem very good. But then again, I want very specific things like a specific watch and a specific guitar.

Here is a quick comparison of the Canadian Dollar vs the USD, EUR, BPD, and the Aust Dollar. Has done pretty good vs all of them over the last 4 years.

I'm thinking of buying a winter home in New Zealand or Tasmania in the next year or two.

The trend is my friend.

Dollar rose to $1.0002 US this morning but is currently at 99.87 US. First time since 1976 it's been on par with the US Dollar.

I was browsing real estate in Hawaii...and with Alberta prices what they are and the dollar where it's at....Why am I thinking of making a move to Kamloops when I can buy a good piece of property in Hawaii for similar money? I mean I might never have another chance in my life to be able to buy a place there.

According to this link the US dollar is currently worth 1.0006 Canadian. It must be live data because when you hit refresh the amount is usually different.

Yahoo is also showing over $1 now.

One thing that is getting thrown around is bid numbers. Not sure how that works, but something I was reading this morning said there was a bid for a higher amount, but no takers.

I remeber when I was in spokane earlier this year, brand new houses where selling for around $180K, just on the outskirts. Hell, you would have a hard time find a condo in or around calgary for that price.

Just looking quickly at housing prices in Portland (not sure why, maybe the flames will move there at some point j/k)
1500 Sq Ft
3 Bed
2.1 Bath
2 car detach garage

Price: $269,900
Built 2006

That would go for at least $350 in calgary right now..

Default Consumer watchdog groups weigh in...

Quote:
CALGARY/AM770CHQR - Why is it that as the Canadian dollar continues to hit record highs not seen in decades, we are still paying significantly more for American products sold here?
A consumer watchdog is now calling on Canadians to send a strong message to those who determine the prices and at the same time, save a buck or two.
Thursday morning, the loonie jumped as high as 99.99 cents U.S., and yet when you go to buy anything from an American-made book to a car in Canada, the difference between what Americans pay and we pay is much more evident.
The Consumers Association of Canada's Bruce Cran says it's not the retailers, but the manufacturers and importers that are making a mint by not adjusting the prices accordingly.
Cran says even our own government is ripping us off, noting Canadians are paying $30 more for a Nexus card than Americans.
He's telling people to shop south of the border to get deals.

Don't people know that supply and demand are bigger indicators on the selling price than the cost to make?

If enough people choose not to buy the products (books for an example), the demand will fall and the price will be forced to fall.

Now that we have the power to do so, we need to take advantage of it.

That is true in most cases. When it comes to the price difference between stuff sold in canada, and the same items sold in the US, there is huge disparity between the 2.

So if we go to the states and purchase items, the demand in canada will fall, then the prices in canada should fall as well.

Manufacturers set the MSRP, retailers set the final price.

There is no reason a book that costs $20 USD should cost $50 CDN. At least now.

If people are still willing to pay $50cdn for a book that retails for $20US, than where is the incentive for the retailers to reduce the price?

If I can sell 100 books for $50 each or 100 books for $20 each, why would I lower the price?
