The 1st round pick is a bit more complicated

if Colorado's 2027 1st (Top 10 protected, Nic Roy trade) goes to Toronto, Calgary acquires a 2028 1st round pick (Top 10 protected, slides to 2029). If the 2027 1st round pick is Top 10, and the 2028 1st slides to Toronto, then Calgary receives Colorado's 2029 1st round pick unconditionally

At the end of the day, it’s not a good thing to use all 3 slots. And I hope this is the last time for a while where the Flames max them out.

Getting Kadri's salary off the books is a good piece of work.
Getting value before he gets older is huge.

But hat long term retention spot will certainly hamper them down the road.

Tkachuk and Bennett didn’t hurt. They built a solid core around a true 1c and then acquired the character necessary to compete. Bennett may have his warts, but his fire is something that team has fed upon.

The old hockey coach in me always had ruffled feathers watching him play. Too much me me me offensively and anyone but me defensively.

I always assumed the rest of the team would see that and be pissed at the guy, but by things said in Calgary and the group in Colorado wanting him back that's clearly not the case.

And all class to the media with the departure.

Kadri is a competitor and guys like that need to play to win. Good for him to get another chance to pay meaningful games. Curious to see how the picks and olofsson work out. I am a big fan of Curran so lets see how he pans out with his development in NCAA. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being the best piece from this deal

Bobrovsky was a much bigger factor than either Tkachuk or Bennett IMO. Generally the team went where he took them.

His main flaw was a tendency to want to do it himself. But in part I suspect that’s caused by not having stellar linemates. His best year was when he and Huberdeau were clicking, so he had a skilled guy to play off of. In his Colorado time he had great linemates (especially when MacKinnon got hurt). I expect he will play much the same thi time around.

If this has been discussed or clarified I apologize, but can anyone confirm how the rights to Curran work?

He hasnt signed an ELC, .and looking into it I found this article from Colorado that claims his rights expire after this season, and he's already declared for UMass next season.

The belief is that according to PuckPedia Max Curran’s rights expire on June 1, 2026 as the talented forward was selected in the fifth round out of the WHL in the 2024 NHL draft before the new CBA’s rule changes.

Another wrinkle to this story is that on February 3rd it was announced that Curran has committed to UMass for the 2026-27 season. Is this the backup plan if he doesn’t receive an offer from Colorado or does he already know it’s not coming? He is known to be an excellent student and this is an exciting opportunity for him but if Colorado gives up their rights to him, Curran would become a college free agent and free to sign anywhere when he is ready to move on from the NCAA.

People forget that this Florida team that now loves to play a low event hockey was the highest scoring team in 2022 under Quenneville since the 1997 Penguins. They scored around 4.5 goals per game, on AVERAGE, which is insane. They've had talent for a while.


What really changed was Maurice came in and turned them into a defense first, grind and wear you down type of team. That's when you saw an immediate improvement in Bob's numbers and goal against ratio.


But all together it takes everything, from talent to the right head coach and a GM with smart moves. Even then, it's pretty amazing that they were able to stop two generational players two years in a row, one who's probably top 10 all time, in their prime.

Rules governing sign-by dates for players from Major Junior to NCAA are yet to be determined, but his sign-by date is now likely June 1st 2028.

Yeah it’s Barkov and Bob. You get an all world two way centre and all world goalie… it’s hard to be a losing franchise. They went out and added the necessary supporting pieces accordingly.

I like the trade condition quirk that gives the Flames have two chances of getting an unprotected 2029 1st instead of just one.

If the Avs fall off in 2026-27 or 2027-28 into a top 10 pick, the Flames will get their 2029 first unprotected.

It’s incredibly unlikely that they’ll be out of the playoffs for any of these years, but you never know. I didn’t have Florida missing the playoffs this year. The Avs are the third oldest team in the NHL now. I can’t imagine they have a deep prospect system.

I like Kadri, but I’m cheering against the Avs after this season is done.
