That cheapskate Edwards holding out for 20% instead of 15%.

I'm guessing ownership expected another team (Montreal?) to step up and make the same offer without retention. Obviously Carolina has an offer out there, I'd be curious what that was like. I'm happy for everyone involved that it worked out, but there's definitely a downside to waiting till the last 48 hours to make bigger trades.

It seems like the going rate for players of the Kadri, Andersson, Hanafin caliber is 1st, 2nd or 3rd, prospect, cap dump. Accept the first trade from a team that makes that offer.

I’m guessing it may have fallen through due to something related to Nichushkin. That rumour seemed to have some validity and seems to line up with this story after. The assets for Roy were less than what the Flames ended up getting.

I’m glad all parties worked to punch it into the end zone today!

Outside of Quinn Hughes did the Flames get the best return of any trade this season?

Feels reminiscent of the Lindholm trade two years ago.

Edit: heck with how well Whitecloud is playing Conroy might have the best two returns this year! (Excluding Hughes)

Dang am I cheering for Colorado to go all the way this year?

Seemed like a trade that helps both sides equally.

I bet that Colorado rink erupts when he steps out.

Andersson: 1st + 2nd + Whitecloud + prospect

Kadri: 1st + 2nd + prospect + Olofsson

Weegar: 3 2nds (equivalent to 1st + 2nd) + Maatta + prospect

None of the 3 are similar to Hughes obviously, or even to the rumoured return for Parayko. But to have THREE deals in with returns in that ballpark is just insane.

This is a watershed event for the organization.

I think there are too many gaps in the story to necessarily make that conclusion.

on Thursday Leafs trade Roy to Avs for 1st and 5th
later that day heard that before the Roy trade, Flames and Avs had a a long conversation on Kadri
heard framework of the deal was there including the picks that went for Roy
heard they agreed on retention. heard it was 15% not the 20% it ended up being
heard it was far down the road and there was a time where everyone thought it was going to happen and then it didn't

heard there was very hard feelings when it didn't cross the line
the Avs were mad, Kadri was mad, the Flames were mad
everyone was upset they put all this work in and it didn't happened

some people blame Flames ownership - honestly Friedman doesn't know

everyone was mad and everyone was blaming everyone else

on Friday they reconvened and they punched it into the end zone
If 20% retention was on the table and then the Avs traded the picks that were supposed to be part of that deal to Toronto for Roy, and Edwards was like screw that, if we're getting a 1st in a later year, it's only 15% retention, then I get it. He also implies the original deal they agreed on was 15% then it became 20% later. It sounds more like Colorado squeezed for more after they had an agreement.

Friedman said they were mad at each other, so I am guess both sides might have pulled some changes, but we don't know the order of operations. It sounds more to me like the Avs backtracked first.

Assuming Friedman even knows. I don't always 100% trust him.

Regardless, it's nice to see that we pulled through and were able to use that last retention slot to obtain a good haul for a player that deserves another cup. And good for him to be able to return to his former squad and get that chance to do so.

I think it was a joke.

Considering 20% is spending more money than 15%.

I think this clearly shows Conroy is a great GM. He waited and waited and it paid off.

Complete props to him, I am so glad he is running the team and not some other terrible GMs around the league.

I just remembered that we're still going to play COL 3 times this year. So how many points will Kadri get against us this year? I'll guess 5 points, since ex-Flames always seem to score against us.

Yeah, this is definitely a win-win trade. All sides got what they wanted

Thought that maybe some of you would like to see Kadri's interview after the trade with members of the Denver media:

He kept stressing how much respect he had for Calgary, and how management treated him and the rest of the players.

Show's the management is great here. We might not be the best destination, but treating players well is important.

Agreed. Of course the pundits will rate it a D or something.

So retention was originally agreed to. Dreger makes up the "Flames won't retain" BS to get clicks. Lot's of CP folks had pitch forks out and Dreger got what he wanted .

While in practice it's been a long transition, this trade deadline is what emotionally truly ended this chapter in Flames hockey, and started the rebuild era. At least that's how I feel about it at the moment. Kadri was such a huge piece of this team during his time here, even if his tenure wasn't super long.

The next years will be the true measurement of the quality of our management and scouting, and of course a measurement of Conroy at the helm.

The risk is obviously that this will be the beginning of a new dark era, and there is always a big element of luck involved in a rebuild, but I feel that at least the Flames have given themselves a chance for a brighter future. There's something to look forward to.

So Kadri’s whole extended family moved to Calgary when he signed here right? Now I assume he and his immediate family are moving back to Denver until the contract is over, until he retires?
