It's actually ridiculous that a team which made the finals 3 years in a row and won the 2 most recent Stanley Cups even has a shot at a top 10 pick let alone possibly getting 1st OA while other teams have struggled for years and have almost no shot.

Considering that the draft is a system whereby adult professionals who live in ostensible democracies are completely stripped of their ability to choose their employer, I’d say it’s fine.

The can choose their employer. They just happen to choose one that has system for how their contractors are deployed.

Now we just need a franchise forward to come our way in the upcoming drafts. We have every other part covered in terms of loading up assets for the future.

Didn’t they trade that pick to Chicago in the Seth Jones trade? Or is it lottery-protected?

Top 10 protected. They are currently 8th with a 6% chance of drafting 1st OA. I ran the simulator on Tankathon and they won the lottery before the Flames did. I know that means nothing, but it was annoying...lol. Damn RNG on that site hates me.

Friedman on 32TP:
on Thursday Leafs trade Roy to Avs for 1st and 5th
later that day heard that before the Roy trade, Flames and Avs had a a long conversation on Kadri
heard framework of the deal was there including the picks that went for Roy
heard they agreed on retention. heard it was 15% not the 20% it ended up being
heard it was far down the road and there was a time where everyone thought it was going to happen and then it didn't
heard there was very hard feelings when it didn't cross the line
the Avs were mad, Kadri was mad, the Flames were mad
everyone was upset they put all this work in and it didn't happened
some people blame Flames ownership - honestly Friedman doesn't know
everyone was mad and everyone was blaming everyone else
on Friday they reconvened and they punched it into the end zone
Kadri didn't like hearing that he wanted out because it has a negative imagery
he wanted the Flames to be painted in a positive light
have nothing against Calgary, he just too old for a rebuild
Felt Flames went above and beyond on his 1000th game night
Flames looked at Kadri as a good soldier, good mentor who never complained and we are going to get it done
Flames were like we are going to pay it forward, we are going to get the good karma, and we are going to put it across the line
Kadri is going to tell everybody the Flames did right by me
Some people really spoke high of Curren
people who know the drafts tell Friedman that the Flames do really well drafting considering they don't draft at the top
heard the Avs players were over the moon when they heard Kadri was coming back

No they aren't, their employer is effectively the NHL. And Adam Fox ended up exactly where he wanted before even playing an NHL game, as a 3rd round pick.

They make millions of dollars to play a game, so it doesn't compare to just about any other form of employment. That's not what this discussion is about.
We're talking about a system that rewards teams for being ultra bad for a few years, or have one bad year during a contention window. It does nothing to help fanbases that have watched their team float in the middle for decades.
The Flames haven't responded to the incentive structure for decades, and got nothing as a reward. Now they're finally responding to it, but it's sad that this is what it took to finally be in the running for some franchise altering players.

They are not stripped of their ability to choose their employer - they can choose to be employed by the NHL, or not. It's pretty simple, they aren't being drafted into the army, they are free to stay home and take the job with the accounting firm if that's what they prefer.

in the end, I think it was the right time for the team, the fans and Kadri to move on, so I don't think anyone is upset. And Kadri sounded genuine in his interview. I'll be supporting him in the playoffs for sure!

If this didn’t go through and it was just Strome it would have been bizarre. Like when they acquired Backstrom.
