So, now the re-sgining watch begins. Prediction: Olofsson and Mataa are re-signed to 1-2 year deals in the offseason, and they plus Whitecloud and Strome will form our new veteran core, leaving almost zero open spots in the lineup for young kids to move up in September/October.

well to add to your despair Maata is already signed
anyhow the path to the elite talent we all crave is through the race to the bottom sadly- but there are many nice pieces to build around our own firsts in 26, 27 and 28 that are likely the real crown jewels of the rebuild

Who was trading a foundational piece today?
Flames have more lottery tickets than anyone and are 31st in the NHL

I am amazed at how fickle CP can be sometimes. Remember how mad we were at Tre for letting the previous core walk for nothing. (Except for Bennett). We got as many as three firsts, and four seconds and actual hockey players (who have leadership acumen), back for players who wanted to be elsewhere. I think that's pretty great. Kadri was a UFA signing who many claimed was an overpayment at the time and signed at a time, where it was debated whether players wanted to sign in Calgary. I think optimism needs to be there in this situation. Conroy did well today and the rest of the deadline.

Panthers are a lottery team, that must take some getting used to after 3 straight finals. Hopefully the Oilers meet a similar fate soon without the cups or the 3rd final.

Unfortunately, there is a salary cap, so teams cannot trade for salary without sending salary back and there's a salary floor, so the Flames have to have veterans in the lineup to ice a legal team

good thing to have vets in the lineup, too. Flames were already a super-young team, now lost leadership from Andersson, Kadri and Weegar. Makes sense to bring in the Whiteclouds, Stromes and Maattas to help absorb that a bit and be role models for the younger guys.

Let's not forget, this team has drafted Gaudreau, Andersson, Wolf, Wyttenbach, Fox, Pospisil, Brodie as some of its notable picks outside the first round. They've also drafted Reschny and Gridin outside the top 15.
There is potential to find diamonds in the rough - recent history has proven that.

oh I totally agree, in fact having an elite team will depend on this (ie 3 consecutive top 5 picks- which I'm sort of predicting) is necessary but not sufficient to hit the next level

Whitecloud is also an asset that has real value. It’s like getting mad the Flames get another 2nd next deadline

I noticed on Puckpedia that it says Curran needs to be signed by June 1, 2026. But in Conroy's presser, he said that Curran is going to UMass next season. I am guessing that him committing to university kyboshes that signing deadline and Puckpedia just hasn't updated?

How many more players are you expecting the Flames to trade and retain on?
Theyll get the Markstrom and Andersson retain slots back this summer.
After Coleman, who else is left?
At the end of the day, it’s not a good thing to use all 3 slots. And I hope this is the last time for a while where the Flames max them out.

I believe Flames are the first team to use all 3? SJ and NYR used 2

I’m not arguing here…but isn’t this exactly what happened? What greater haul were you thinking would happen? As for the money, what would you recommend that the flames use retention slots for besides retention to achieve exactly what you are advocating for?

There's also this scenario:
Vegas wins the Cup this year, turning the 2028 2nd Round Pick into a 1st Round Pick. Vegas crashes out and their 2027 1st Round Pick then shifts to 2029.
Colorado also crashes out, picking top 10 in 2027 pushing their 2028 1st Rounder to Toronto, giving the Flames their 2029 1st Round Pick.
Calgary wins the draft lottery, picking 1st Overall in 2027
Calgary finishes last, but Vegas wins the draft lottery. Calgary picks 1st and 2nd Overall in 2028
Vegas finishes last and Calgary finishes 2nd last and Colorado wins the draft lottery; Calgary picks 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Overall in 2029
Is this likely? Who's to say.
