That's not trading him for the sake of trading him.
That's trading an aging vet for decent value.
Sure if someone is offering you a 4th then you sit on him. But that is clearly not the case.

I really dont love the flames putting these guys both in the lineup tonight. Surely one is gonna move with the retention slot. I'd say maybe this means nothing is close but even so there is absolutely no sense in taking this risk, what do you gain?

I like that we keep playing our guys. Lets other GMs know they need to get their serious offers in.

The Wild have to keep up in the central, would they pivot to Kadri? Not sure he'd want to go there but there was a rumor previously that Kadri wouldn't think about any other place whilst COL was still an option, which it likely isn't now.

Totally agree, there's no rule. But I think you are undervaluing the impact actions have over words.
1. Zero secrete - Calgary would like to trade these players for the right offer. Not sitting them doesn't "trick" other teams into thinking Calgary's preference isn't to move them. So on that, I agree, it's not like playing fools teams on our preference to move them.
2. Where it does matter - Conroy might say to other GMs, he's comfy going into next season with these players..........but that's where sitting them or not matters. Actions speak louder than words. Playing them shows other GMs, whether they think he's right or wrong, that Conroy is confident he can get his price down the road with both players, and is willing to keep playing them with the risk of injury up to the deadline. That actually proves to the other GMs that this years trade deadline is not a hard deadline for Conroy, and that is critical in his negotiations if no one has met his price yet.
Now - Conroy himself actually has to believe the above as well, and can't just be posturing, but my guess is he does believe it.

Are Steinberg and Francis still going to say it's a buyer's market during the intermission tonight?

I think there's a case to be made that we are valuing retention to high.
We paid probably the highest price ever for "retention" or salary in the Monahan trade. Ever since, the consistent rumor is that we have been trying to hold others to a similar price for $.
The Roy price is very high, but there are limited centres on the market. If we are asking any more for Kadri 50% than what Tre got for Roy, we are probably asking for too much.
A similar thing can be noted in the Myers trade, where sureloss shared the rumor that another team was offering a 2nd but the 4th and retention seemed to enter the equation at the same time. So, retention of 1.5 million (+residual of this year) worth only a 4th rounder.
The kadri retention is also a lot of real money. Probably insignificant to our development curve, and unlikely to make the team unprofitable, but some people are focused on all numbers on the balance sheet at all times, apparently.

If Trocheck isn't working out in Minnesota, would have to think they start to look at asking about Kadri or ROR. And ROR wants to stay in Nashville, so maybe Kadri would waive for Minnesota. Doubtful, but maybe. Trocheck is the guy we have to wait on for Kadri's fate. Would have to think Carolina, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Detroit, and others are still in on Kadri and may wait until the last minute. He isn't a team's primary option, otherwise, he would have been dealt by now.

I mean, it should be no surprise that they're both in the lineup given there's been no formal agreed to offer.
Things can obviously change, and as we saw with Weegar yesterday they can change very quickly but I see no reason to hold them out unless a deal's been agreed to.
That said I have still heard that both players are expecting to move, so I'm personally giving Craig the benefit of the doubt here.

Feels like Flames should be able to maximize the value on Coleman at the very least. Kadri is tougher I get but hopefully Carolina misses out on Trochek.
I think they did okay on Weegar but still feel it's underwhelming even after sleeping on it. One of those 2nds needed to be Utah's 1st, or the prospect needed to be Beaudoin.
Hopefully Conroy can get a clear win here today like the other sellers have been able to manufacture so far.

Why does a deal need to be agreed to?
Leafs held out 3 guys last night and I don't think any of them have a deal agreed to.
Risking injury here is a foolish decision by the org.

Why on earth would we trade Coleman for a second round pick? He’s a good player and great team guy. I’d rather have that than a late second rounder.

Coleman is better than Roy, and Roy did manage to get a first. I was feeling down on the first for coleman after weegar, but with that on the books I don't see how we don't manage a 1st for him.

I think Minnesota probably takes a look at Kadri. I think they know they need to add a center for the arms race in the central.

The Flames need to sit Kadri and Coleman tonight even if they don't have pending trades just to mess with the acquiring teams to create a bidding war.

The Flames are horrible minus the goalies.
Realistically they probably could have done nothing and they would have finished bottom 5. With very little chance of being better in the foreseeable future.
Might as well sell the farm at this point and get into the bottom two.

Why would they sit Coleman and Kadri out? Is Trocheck sitting out for the Rangers? The idea they would sit out two veteran players with term is ridiculous, unless a deal was at the finish line.
