I think a major part that was a drive to do this deal now is that if Weegar had a poor season again next year (and there was a good chance as Flames willbe even worse next year) then he turns into an untradebale asset. A 33 year old dman making 6.5 that just had 2 bad season in a row... ya good luck trading that.

Another major part is that he had a full NTC, so many times we have seen players with full NTCs return barely anything due to them controlling the destination.

Trading Weegar proactively vs reactively was a major win, and I really don't see how you could get a better return for him unless he came back to form

i liked Weegs, but couldn't count how many time I have yell "GODDAMMIT WEAGER!!!"through the TV. So, I'm not upset he got traded, the return isn't that terrible base on the way he's been playing this season and he is 32 and still have 6 more years on his current contract.

Back then many fans were upset they didn't get a first, but Cliff Fletcher told us that two seconds was just as good as a first. They drafted Joe Nieuwendyk and Stephane Matteau. As you probably know, Nieuwendyk yielded Iginla.

Let's do it again...

Home run trade in my view on multiple levels.

Maata (Calder top 5 as a rookie), recent Finnish Olympian who is younger than Weegar yet lower AAV and shorter deal. TOI was top 4 for most of his career. Usage low this year as supplanted by younger Dmen. Rebound with more responsibility as Flame? Likely. Flip for a pick next year or UFA year. Veteran stability on Left D. Allows us to easily move Hanley for another mid round pick before trade deadline.

Castagna is B prospect with good numbers in 3rd year at Cornell. Faceoff specialist. Ready for jump to AHL next year. Center depth for farm at worst. Canadian kid.

3 2nd round picks. NYR pick is very high 2nd round. Ottawa and Utah picks likely still top 50. Same value as 18th overall pick (Source: https://soundofhockey.com/2022/06/06...l-draft-picks/)

Weegar contract would be an anchor in last couple years when we will need cap space. Down year, might be start of decline. Much rather watch Parekh on PP1 and Brz on PP2 quarterbacking during these next couple rebuild years.

We become a bit less competitive to secure our top 5 position in draft.

IIRC one of the second round picks came from Minnesota when we traded Kent Nilsson to them.

If those seconds become a component of drafting or trading for a first line center which is a possibility. Out of three seconds you have a solid chance of getting a good player if you play nothing but odds.

Also I maintain again gm’s are really reluctant to give up on Center prospects and i think that Castagna is being really under rated here. He has the size, pro skating, is excellent in the dot, and is over point per game on a bad team. All the fundamentals are there for a very good third line C and maybe if he was with some higher end players his offensive ceiling might look better than it does currently.

I see is as a very fair fair trade for both teams but if if Weegs does crater then its outright theft unless every single pick and Castagna all bombed.
Cornell has a good team. Someone said they are currently #9 in hhe nation.

A couple things I like about this trade:
1 Castagna is only 20. Great stats this year and has only improved since being drafted. It seems in the past we would have received a similar level prospect that was 22-23 years old. I think we are underestimating his potential imo.
2. Having 4 2nds this draft will allow the team to pick a ‘swing for the fences’ type prospect where they otherwise wouldn’t.

Castagna scored top 10 in multiple tests at the 2023 draft combine.

Well Niewendyk was 27 overall. So these days that's a first in the last quarter of the draft.

Who knows what comes of this, but one of these will be within the first 6 picks of the round, and all could be in the top 50 picks. If they can get one player who plays 200 games as a Flame that's a bit better than break even.

In his 20 goal 52 point season he was the best dman on the team IMO.

Was a + player on a bad team that season.
Sure, but I don’t think any GM is taking Weegar over Anderson or Hanifin.

I think the season you referenced is not who Weegar actually is, and neither is this season. He’s something in between. He ideally fits on your second pair on a contending team, but good enough flex up to 1b and not hurt you on a decent team.

It is interesting to look back at the entire dismantling of the d-core from the start 2024 season now.

Tanev
Weegar
Andersson
Hanifin
Zadorov

For

2026 1st (VGK)
2027 1st (VGK)
2028 2nd (VGK - Could become a 1st)
2024 2nd (DAL)
2026 2nd (NYR)
2026 2nd (OTT)
2026 2nd (UTA)
2024 3rd (VGK)
2026 3rd (VAN)
2024 5th (CGY)
Whitecloud
Maatta
Miromanov
Grushnikov
Wiebe
Castagna

Overall that feels okay, maybe a little underwhelming...lacks a little quality but they got a lot of quantity back.

Feels like they did better than they should have on the Andersson trade, maybe a little worse on the Weegar trade but kind of evens out.

I like it. Now move Kadri and Coleman. Flames have 6 picks in the first two rounds in 2026... Let's make it 9!

That assumes many things
- That Buffalo sees Weegar as close to Parayko.
- Weegar would waive to go there
- Flames willing to risk that Utah pulls the deal.

Where that nets out is that the trade possibly falls through and he remains here. Not a disaster either.

But I don't think Buffalo would have bucked up the same package in return.
And do we know if St. Louis is retaining or not? I've not heard that either way.

I think when your price is met. You make a deal.
