It's not like this generation has been a homerun for Sony and that's with competition from the Xbox so no fanboys should ever hope for the death of competition as that's what has killed a lot of classic games like EA Sports Madden. Sony is in a bit of a rut with their 1st party titles all feeling too similar in formula and lacking in quantity. I think the success of Expedition 33 illustrates how gamers may be a bit tired of the current state of gaming with so many sequels and games made from the same blueprint. Hopefully we can see more games push the envelope over a lot of the safe sequels we have been seeing.

Bought this and have been playing it. Have made it through a few biomes or areas or whatever you want to call them.

The issue for me so far in terms of this keeping my attention is that the metaprogression seems tied to basically nothing. It doesn't make me want to jump back in and play it and sink a bunch of time into it immediately because it's like... ok what's the point of all this?

Maybe it's just intended to be a distracting time-killer, but I guess I am finding I prefer my roguelikes etc. to have some story or intrigue to them beyond the standard gameplay loop. Which, so far, is fun enough but not like... crazily addicting or anything.

I'll put some more time in and see if my opinion changes.

Not that I disagree with you on this take, but the sales numbers of Sony's first party AAA games imply that people still gravitate to the big name titles first and foremost over unique and interesting AA or Indie titles. We need people to reject big name stuff in higher quantities (like if more people avoided buying recent Pokemon games because of the major quality issues) to really make the industry change.

There's a demo out for Vampire Crawlers. It's a deckbuilder by the Vampire Survivors dev.

I may have made a terrible mistake with Baldur's Gate 3. This is...incredibly boring.

A few of my buddies badgered me to get Baldur's Gate 3 so I could play with them. Meanwhile, I play video games maybe once a week and they literally played it daily, so I'd show up and they've done half the game by the time I'm playing for the second time.

I haven't played it in like a year now. Only purchased the game on their recommendation, and frankly I couldn't give two drops of piss about it. Not my kind of game at all.

Just finished Clair Obscur and it’s up there with my favourites of all time. Great story, art, gameplay, and incredible music. Game really has it all.

can't wait to dive into Resident Evil Requiem this weekend. Deliberately stayed away from all additional trailers, videos etc. that came out after the reveal trailer, so I'm going in as blind as possible. Hyped!

When I initially bought BG3 I had a similar experience. Got bored, didn't play it for a couple months. Then 1 day I was bored and decided to give it another try. I became hopelessly addicted. It's an amazing RPG but takes some commitment to get into the flow of the game.

I think I saw you mention liking First Berserker Khazan in another post? Give the Nioh games a try if so. Khazan is what I would consider basically a 'Nioh-like'. Nioh 3 just came out and is pretty good, but Nioh 2 is also just as good for pretty cheap.

EDIT: NVM, I scrolled back to your post about Khazan and saw you literally mentioned Nioh in your post. Derp.

I enjoyed BG3 but to me, Divinity Original Sin 2 was much more fun.

I liked BG3 but I never finished. Stopped around the start of Act 3. DOS2 was very good from the little I played leading up to BG3 but I also never finished...

I think I might have commitment issues.

A ton of those "GOTY" games are boring and never live up to the hype unless you are a patient gamer and really give it a chance. In a world where people's attention spans are shorter than ever and overall less time to game with family/work commitments, if a game doesn't pull you in right away there's a good chance it gets passed over. I'm a pretty patient gamer and lucky enough to have time and a wife that like to sit and play stuff together with me, but I can understand people nope-ing out of many "high end" games when it's a slow burn.

Biggest one for me ever was Metal Gear Solid 5. Universally praised, but took me 5 re-tries over the course of 9 years to finally beat the prologue and get into it. Clair 33 is another. GOTY in many circles but it never fully clicked for me and even when it did, meh. Cyberpunk and DLC is a fun game, but there are other open worlds that are much better. It's not even top 10 for me. Playing Alan Wake 2 right now which is another top rated game, but it's so...boring in many spots.

I want to get Baldur's Gate 3 at some point, but with it winning GOTY when it came out, I'm almost expecting to be disappointed by it.

Gamepass is both a blessing and curse in that regard. So much to choose from, but very easy to just pass on a game if it does not draw me in within the first 10 mins. I learned to only have 3-4 games on the go at once and rotate in a new game when I finish one. That keeps my attention on that set. Usually have an FPS, open world, a rogue-lite and some Indie game on rotation. I'll add in a new game of the same genre when I beat one.

This is one of those posts that just makes me sad for you that you can't get enjoyment out of things that are so clearly brilliant (although I can't speak to MGS5 as I never played anything past 2).

I have very little time to play stuff too but probably 2-3 games a year are simply inarguably worth making time for, even if you don't end up finishing them.

I'm not saying their bad or anything. Heck, I have Cyberpunk in front of me as I type this with almost 200 hours put in. Just, I never really get caught up in the hype of most games as others do when it comes to being labelled as GOTY or anything like that.

I wonder how much of this is getting older, and priorities and tastes changing.

MGS 1, 2, 3, and 4 I remember picking up immediately and playing them to death. I had exactly the same problem as Huntingwhale with MGS 5 (GZ and TPP both). I still haven't finished GZ and moved onto TPP, even though I bought both upon launch. Hell, I have the MGS 3 remake and even that I started playing and something felt... off.

Meanwhile I've been playing through The Division 2 on a near-daily basis. I dunno.

Still haven't played BG3, and I probably won't.

I had a similar experience with Diablo IV. I used to love these types of games when I played on desktops in the late 90s, early 2000s, but I think my attention span has changed. I don't have the patience and get incredibly bored. I only made it ~10 hours into Diablo 4 before bailing.

And yet I played Diablo 3 not that long ago and recall liking it, so I dunno..
