Just so Im getting the straight goods in this thread...
If I understand this correctly:
An early second round pick is essentially a 1st rounder.....correct?
Or does it only work one way?

Your point is correct, but I think you missed that D is for David was being sarcastic. Like, sulphuric acid martini levels of sarcastic.

I know they are probably trying to keep theor clicks up during the Olympic break, but there still seems to be lots of noise from the media/insiders about Kadri being happy to be traded and it is more likely than not. The same with Coleman.
Hopefully there are some trades perculating during this break in the season and we get lots of crazy trades happening before the deadline.

Other than ROR, not very many centers on the market, especially of Kadri’s caliber.
I didn’t think Nelson would get what he got, but he did and that’s what we should be getting for Kadri. Maybe even slightly more because of term.

What was the point then?
You don't think people were trying to justify their negative spin on a trade by trying to pretend a 1st round pick is close to a 2nd when the actual 2nd round pick from that same team (or equivalent) would be much worse?

Sorry man ... don't think I ever spin a Flames result to put rosy glasses on it.
I may be more positive than some, but I wouldn't call an early 2nd round pick a 1st to make my point.
And I'm open to all and every debate on issues and valuations. Always have been.
This person wanted to dig in on a negative opinion (allowed), but used a flimsy argument to do it, and here we are.

I don't know why this is even an argument. You can basically look at the value difference between each pick online. There is even a value difference between #32 and #33.
So saying:
"A late 1st round pick is essentially a 2nd round pick" is just wrong, and probably screams bias in posts that are probably written with bias in mind.
If you at least bother to say:
"A late first round pick is closer in value to an early second than a mid-1st round pick", then I think you will at least get some traction in your argument. So if this is what you mean, then say what you mean.
Trying to defend a late 1st round pick as somehow being equal to a 2nd round pick is a silly argument without any supporting evidence. We literally see teams moving up and down the drafts every year, and the costs they pay for that movement.

This 1st round pick/2nd round pick discussion is making our collective iq drop.
Reminds me of Pratt and Taylor arguing over whether poker is a sport. About as silly/inane as arguing over a draft pick. People dig in on their positions and reason/rationale goes out the window, becomes more about being right. For your listening pleasure (5 min listen)

I know Eklund is a bit of a wild card “trade rumour” guy but he has Kadri at 45% to Dallas, 30% to Edmonton??????, 25% to Montreal.
Has there ever been anything about Edmonton wanting Kadri?

I bet he thinks it would be for Mangiapane and a depth pick, too.
MTL or DAL I could see.

If Edmonton has the best offer for Kadri - they can have him.
They can use anyone of Kadri, Coleman, Weegar, Whitecloud, Pachal, Hanley to be honest.
Whitecloud SHOULD be their target.

The potential for those picks to turn into a player aren't that much different. The goal of management is to get the best draft picks that can aid in the construction of the future. Kicking picks two or three seasons down the road is a failure in my books, but that is just my opinion. Some may like it and see the 1st attached and get hard over it. It is where the pick is, whether is helps the team drive that pick later in the draft, and the ultimate quality of the draft. Lots of moving parts that need to be evaluated.
|
This doesn’t really make sense. Expansion increases the number of picks because it increases the number of teams, which increases the number of potential total players in the league, which increases the likelihood of draft picks playing on the league.
That purposely puts aside any conversation around advancements in health, training, development, etc. As the number of picks has increased so has the number of actual NHLers drafted, without average games played ever really changing much.
And you can’t both decide a pick past the upcoming draft is a “failure” while mocking people for getting “hard” that it’s a first when the moving parts haven’t been evaluated yet.

If they were smart they would actually target Whitecloud because he addresses a real and pressing need - a steady presence on the back end.
But if they made any noise around Flames players it would certainly be for Kadri (not even Coleman who is also more in line with their needs).
And that's because Bowman and Edmonton are no good. Forever one one-dimensional forward away from glory!
