One does not play an Edmund McMillen game to see "cute".

There's a demo on Steam for that Replaced. I really like games with that art style, will give it a try.

Default Sony Shutters Bluepoint

Kotaku Article

Quote:
Sony is shutting Bluepoint Games down just five years after buying it. Hermen Hulst said the decision was the result of an “increasingly challenging industry environment” in a note to staff on Thursday. It’s a shocking end for a studio that Hulst himself admits “delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community” and comes despite a recent jump in profits for Sony’s gaming division.
I feel like this is a big mistake, Bluepoint is a top tier remake/remaster studio.

Jake Soloman, who left Firaxis to open his open studio, has announced that it's being shut down too. I hope he lands somewhere that can take advantage of his creativity.

XBOX Management Changes
This could end up as an effective relaunching of Xbox.

Messaging and direction under Bond was cluttered, and momentum killing.

Asha's article here:

Quote:
My first job is simple: understand what makes this work and protect it.

That starts with three commitments.

First, great games.

Everything begins here. We must have great games beloved by players before we do anything. Unforgettable characters, stories that make us feel, innovative game play, and creative excellence. We will empower our studios, invest in iconic franchises, and back bold new ideas. We will take risks. We will enter new categories and markets where we can add real value, grounded in what players care about most.

I promoted Matt Booty in honor of this commitment. He understands the craft and the challenges of building great games, has led teams that deliver award-winning work, and has earned the trust of game developers across the industry.

Second, the return of Xbox.

We will recommit to our core Xbox fans and players, those who have invested with us for the past 25 years, and to the developers who build the expansive universes and experiences that are embraced by players across the world.

We will celebrate our roots with a renewed commitment to Xbox starting with console which has shaped who we are. It connects us to the players and fans who invest in Xbox, and to the developers who build ambitious experiences for it.

Gaming now lives across devices, not within the limits of any single piece of hardware. As we expand across PC, mobile, and cloud, Xbox should feel seamless, instant, and worthy of the communities we serve. We will break down barriers so developers can build once and reach players everywhere without compromise.

Third, future of play.

We are witnessing the reinvention of play.

To meet the moment, we will invent new business models and new ways to play by leaning into what we already have: iconic teams, characters, and worlds that people love. But we will not treat those worlds as static IP to milk and monetize. We will build a shared platform and tools that empower developers and players to create and share their own stories.
What we "know" is coming:

- New Xbox (will reportedly feature Xbox store, Steam store, Epic Games store)
- New Controller release imminent

It sounds like their new box will be a more premium version of the Steambox, and also release sometime between the Steambox and PS6.

If Microsoft nails this, it could be revitilization of the brand. Asha is out there on social media canvassing the fanbase, taking feedback from the fans already.

I love the brand, but everyone could see how poorly the last few years have gone for them. Muddled messaging, stagnant hardware...but also some wins like Xbox Play Anywhere, devices like the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally acting as a preview of what's to come.

ComixZone the gamer is excited by this change. Strong Xbox -> good for the industry.

What makes the Series X "stagnant hardware"? It's a solid piece of tech and visually I think it's better looking than the PS5.

That is huge, and could completely revitalize the Xbox brand. I wonder if there will be restrictions though, will Sony be ok with their exclusives with PC ports being playable on an Xbox? And would Microsoft be ok with the Xbox turning into a emulation machine since Retroarch is on Steam? Still, this could sign the death warrant of the Steambox before it even comes out. We know it will cost more than a PS5 with significantly less power, but an Xbox will likely be priced comparably to the PS5 with likely significantly more power, simply due to Microsoft having the power to subsidize their hardware to an extent that Valve never could

Stagnant as far as market growth.

Xbox’s hardware sales haven’t been strong for a while now. I agree, the Series X is great, but also agree with criticism of the Xbox brand over the last few years.

The messaging between the multiplatform games, and flip flopping publicly/being unclear around it hurt the brand and made people doubt the future of Xbox. I think this year they have the ability to really revitalize it.

The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is effectively a preview of what’s to come. It allows for everything, including PlayStation published games via Steam/wherever.

The Xbox Ally is just a portable PC though with an Xbox label, it can't actually play Xbox games. There was quite a bit of backlash from early adopters who assumed they could play their existing Xbox library, only to realize they were stuck with the small "play anywhere" library. A next-gen Xbox console wouldn't have that problem, and would have the power to play anything in your Steam library with high graphics settings. If Microsoft eats the hardware costs like they did with earlier consoles and prices it in-line with the PS5/PS6, it suddenly opens up PC gaming to a whole new market
