4. Sounds like he wasnt the instigator, but did instigate the violence.
A lot of people are able to see that while what he did was really dumb and he will probably regret it (and likely learn/grow from the mistake) we can still add the pieces together to understand the why, and the result really isn't all that surprising.

I'm not a lawyer. Would a violent criminal record prevent him from crossing the border? If it was in Canada, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be allowed to travel to the US. What about a Canadian in the US that was charged in the US?
Yes. that is why this is bigger news.
He's currently on a student visa probably in the US and getting charged with a felony.
That student visa can be revoked. Also, obtaining a work visa in the future to play NHL games becomes more problematic.
But he'll have the best lawyers working their way through this.
Bar fights are stupid, fighting in general is stupid, I don't mind physical competition, BJJ, boxing etc, I find that enjoyable but an actual fight is just dumb. He's a dumb immature teenager. With all that said... if someone was coming up to my mother, calling her a whore, berating her, I might react as well. There are very few things and get me riled up but I would never allow my mom to face that scurrility. I wouldn't haul off and slug them but things probably wouldn't be polite. The obvious virtue signalling is a little nauseating but from a purely emotional point of view.. I get it. My mom is a god damn saint though, so the thought of someone verbally abusing her like that would make turning the other cheek difficult
This is red flag behaviour but depending on the story I wouldn't write off the kid. You don't want to see this kind of crap though.
This will blow over assuming the kid learns something from it. An 18 year old getting in a fight does happen from time to time. The coach of our AHL team did something similar and he was a few years older.

One good punch to the side of the face can knock out 3 teeth and break the jaw in multiple spots.
It seems kind of excessive to me. We see 230 lb hockey players deliver haymakers all the time and don't see those kinds of injuries from one punch. If it was one punch, the other guy must have hit something on the way down or face planted hard.

People can die from a single punch. Did you see what Anthony Joshua to the social media influncer/boxer Jake Paul last month? The final blow completely ruined his jaw, broke it in two places.

As a guy that worked as a doorman when he was younger I can tell you that one punch can do a lot of damage sometimes. I even saw a guy's eyeball pop out of its socket once.
I grew up in a small town in a time when fights were common from elementary school right up to going to the bar days. I actually made a lot of friends at school after a good first fight. That was the 1980s though and things were different.

I don’t see this impacting his stock significantly. 18yr old kid getting provoked…..lots of opinions here but we were all 18 once and perhaps would have done the same thing.

Would a misdemeanor conviction be a risk to being able to cross the border in the future?
I know technically, they can deny you entry for any reason they want and even not enforce things they don't want to, but just curious about how something like this might be handled.
I think border/ visa issues would be his biggest risk, as money should take care of the Justice System side.
For the most part, his herd of lawyers should be able to take care of any potential CBP/ USCIS issues.
