Panarin log-jam out of the way, now everyone can focus on the Flames' players when the real deadline hits. Nice.

Too bad the freeze happened...I wonder if you could have gotten Tampa to make a mistake after losing out on Panarin

Yeah but now they have the benefit of time to sit on it and think.
Can't get a same day panic trade after you miss out on the big fish...a la Brad Treliving.
Still think there will be a bit of a log jam between Kadri, Trocheck, O'Reilly and potentially Thomas if the Blues decide to move him.
Coleman is the premier winger that's probably available now though.

The biggest panic trade Treliving was ever involved in, it was someone else who panicked. On June 26, 2015, he traded a 1st and two 2nds for Dougie Hamilton. The Oilers had been trying to get Hamilton themselves, and were left with a 1st and 2nd burning a hole in their pocket. So the very same day, they traded those picks for Griffin freaking Reinhart.
Just saying.

That's true. It was never quite the same day for Treliving - and I was referencing more his acquisitions of Carlo and Laughton last year where he moved the assets he offered for Rantanen in the deals for those two then in the end.
Same thing here.
Maybe you don't get Bjorkstrand, 1st, and O'Reilly for Coleman, which was rumored to be the Panarin offer...
But maybe you can do Bjorkstrand + O'Reilly and don't have to retain on Coleman because you take back that contract, and means you leave the retention spot for Kadri.
Or in an ideal world still don't have to retain on Kadri (ie. Carolina and Kotkaniemi), and then can flip Bjorkstrand at 50% and he probably becomes valuable at that point.

Trade terms with the Sharks on Panarin were not agreed to. La was his preference so it wouldn’t have mattered but they wanted Will Smith and the Sharks turned it down.

This is a clue as to what deals might be available with the Sharks.

Wanted Will Smith but settled for Liam Greentree, yikes that is a big drop off between those two players.

Didn’t really have a choice. Panarin eventually said LA only. Wasn’t willing to waive his NMC or sign an extension with any other team and his agent focused only on LA.

The rangers got Flamed. By that I mean they got Hanifin/Anderssoned.
Shoe horned into a trade with a single team.

No, this trade was much worse for the Rangers than either the Hanifin or Andersson trade was for the Flames.
A 1st, a 2nd, and a decent roster player is actually a pretty good return for a rental defenceman. A 1st, a 3rd, and a minor-leaguer for the same type of player isn't terrible. A 3rd plus a prospect who's showing regression is an awful return for a top-line forward with an extension.
