This is kind of 'The Thing.'

They're droning on and on about the 'Vaunted' Starfleet Academy and trying to return it to it's former greatness but, from a story-telling standpoint?

Tell us that. You're telling a story...or...trying to. Tell the audience that you're accepting people that normally would never make the cut in a million years because you're rebuilding and desperate.

Tell the audience. Explain the circumstances. Build. The. World.

Because what do we as the audience see? First-rate Technology. Everything works. Top-end ships. Etc.

So what are we as the audience supposed to think? That this incorrigible group of malcontents, losers and ne'er-do-wells are the Best of the Best? Its inherently contradictory in theme and tone.

They should have made Starfleet Academy a craphole. A work-in-progress. But they didnt. Its a gleaming and shining amazing institution...filled with idiots.

I just figure they can make things look nice pretty fast in whatever century they're in.

No reason for SA to look like a craphole.

Go back to season one of TNG. You have a Vulcan likely much older and wiser than the other competitors, a clearly bright young woman just finishing secondary schooling, a Benzite who may actually already be an adult and at the top of his fields on Benzar and a literal proto-god on the path to Q-dom... and only one of them gets to go to the academy.

I'm glad I've skipped this show. What a mess. How can one man keep missing the mark on what people want from Star Trek?

That episode really made no sense. That's an extraordinary amount of time and resources to admit just one person into SA.

Those ships during the Dominion War better have been empty because they would have lost a massive number of incredibly valuable officers.

I know tongue in cheek, and obviously you know, but I thought one of the most harrowing parts of "In the pale moonlight" was them reading off the list of dead officers.

Kurtzman will never be able to produce this level of emotion with his writing teams. He probably doesn't even realize how far off he is.

I think we find out later that this was a process for late/mid term admission. Because Wesley was underage/too young for normal admission so he couldn't just enroll.

I suppose that poses the question - who is this show made for?

I guess the answer is "massive fans of Discovery and Picard".

Whats hilarious is, given my reading of other star trek spaces, not even many fans of discovery - already a vanishing group - are fans of SA. Some are still trying to come up with excuses but the tide is hard against and no one is jumping for joy. Its not as catastrophic as sec 31 but I do hope this is the end of Kurtz trek. Its absolutely bombing in viewership too.

They're clearly trying to make a Gen-Z college/university soap opera set in the Trek universe. The problem is that the universe they've created here doesn't really resemble Star Trek at all.

So I decided to do a Strange New Worlds re-watch in anticipation of the new season, S1E2 at the Captain's dinner Pike is talking to Uhura about being in Starfleet and how hard it is to get into the Academy and how much harder it is to get posted to the Enterprise and how Starfleet is incredibly difficult to get in and how its a lifelong passion and only the best of the best manage to make it.

And then there is the Starfleet Academy show which essentially wipes it's ass with this concept. Its difficult to square these two ideas.

Discovery. It is all Discovery's fault. SFA is just Discovery, re-skinned. That is why it is so bad and makes no sense.

I want Q to snap in and reveal to us that discovery was all a nightmare he placed in Riker's mind.

Ya know...the series finale of STD almost mirroring the Series finale of Enterprise with Riker and Troi just kind of shuddering as they exit the Holodeck would have been poetic in it's own way...
