Look like very low turnout today at the Big 4 for the separatists.

Interesting times Trout. Being in BC now you must have some views on the BCSC decision re the Cowichan claim and the possible consequences for the Land Title system and fee simple ownership. I am surprised the case has not received more national attention. This needs to make its way through the Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court right away. Can the Chief Justice of the SCC require that the case be heard without it going through the normal process, like a reference? I am assuming BC has appealed, any idea when the BCCA will hear it?

1. Many Canadian businesses with HQs in Calgary or Edmonton will relocate to Toronto or Vancouver, taking all those jobs with them. This already happened decades ago in Quebec, when literally hundreds of corporate head offices left Montreal (primarily for Toronto, but also some for Calgary) due to the threat of Quebec separatism.
2. Hundreds of thousands (perhaps even millions?) of Alberta residents who wish to remain loyal citizens of Canada will leave Alberta. They will sell their homes and move to another province. A sudden increase in available Alberta homes for sale will see housing supply significantly outpace demand, causing home values to plummet. Many homeowners who choose to stay in Alberta will lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in home equity value and may even find themselves underwater on their mortgage. Meanwhile, cities like Toronto and Vancouver will suddenly find their already-stressed housing market suffering even more demand due to a massive and sudden increase in people relocating from Alberta, making housing in those cities even less affordable than it is now.
|
3.I would add a third major negative economic consequence for those 51st statist folks should Alberta separate and join the US would be that most of Calgary's oil and midstream companies would get swallowed up by US-Based companies and most of the white collar work that has provided the kind of prosperity Alberta separatists have chided 'Ottawa' of inhibiting would sink south post-separation. Alberta would find out real quick why there's only ~1 million people living in Montana vs. ~5 million living in Alberta.

But they said they already have 64000 signatures and that all they need to do is repeat that for the next 15 weeks and they’ll hit a million! As if their supporters haven’t blown their wad already…

This is one of my big concerns. I was born in Calgary but consider myself Canadian first and Albertan second. I don't want to leave but if Alberta votes to separate I think I would. But I expect real estate would tank meaning I'd take a big hit financially.

If we are having trouble building pipelines in Canada, how exactly is that going to get easier when AB separates? Do they think we can just strong arm our way into getting it built?
I'm assuming they don't have enough collective brain cells to answer that.

Was it here where someone posted that conversation about how they'll inspect every truck from BC for rats? Basically, the plan seemed to be "we'll be complete pricks and if they don't like it, let us build a pipeline." I'm sure that will work out really well.

Rath said they'd wage economic warfare on BC and blockade it. Then BC would give them a pipeline.
That's the depth of rationality we are dealing with here. Do like Trump. Win like Trump. Yay Trump.
I think they should have to put up an economic bond during this process that covers losses due to uncertainty. They win, they keep it. They lose, they pay us back. I know this is impossible to measure, but apparently you can just make stuff up, so I'll put the price at $25 billion before we can have a referendumb.
