I still consider Weegar to be a warrior, and a very good D who would help any team’s playoff fortunes. Any other team would most certainly use his current season as leverage in any trade, though. If it were last year’s Weegar, I think we could get a premium, just based on his contract- looks pretty cheap these days. I don’t think there’s any chance of a prospect of Dickinson’s level will be going anywhere, though.

I always wonder how much one off season affects value. The flipside is that two bad seasons will hurt his value for sure

Weegar may not be having a great season, but if he gets put on the market, he would draw a lot of interest from around the league. Everyone knows who he is by now, and he has a nice contract. In today's market, that's an attractive asset in itself. Weegar would command a ransom.

My Calgary Flames' Trade Bit Board power rankings (LoL):
Coleman
Kadri
Whitecloud
Lomberg
Hanley
Pachal
Pospisil
Weegar
Kirkland

List is ordered by the most likely traded this season. This is not suggesting that the Flames trade everyone on this list or anything, but just who I think may be traded based on a combination of rumours, excess in position, and straight guessing out of my butt.

Weegs would get us a nice package in any trade, but we need to keep some vets around as well, to usher in the next “generation”, so to speak. Weegs has always seemed like he wants to be here, so maybe he fits the bill.

Only way Weegar goes is for a blue chip 1C prospect.

I don't think so. Coleman has a 10 team trade list. Once the Flames ask for and receive that, Coleman's influence is more or less gone. He has a year left after this so pulling a "I'm not going to re-sign with team x" has less effect. Which, based on recent history, is why a lot of folks feel this is the year to trade him.

I've really liked how Bahl is developing but I do not think its good for anyone to have him be our #1 defense.

At some point you need to developed the young guys appropriately. We need Weegar to keep everyone where they should be.

Weegar is keeping everyone where they should be, on the ice instead of him. He's having a rough season.

At this point Craig should have a 4 Sale sign stapled to the roster sheet and be listening to all offers.

Doesn't mean you have to trade anyone else, but with how many teams are circling the Flames to see what other business they may want to get done, I'd argue everyone should be available for the right price.

I wouldn't worry about replacing kadri at center. Some players thrive off of minutes, and you don't know until they are given them. Is zary a perennial all star in waiting? Who knows. A rebuilding team can find out though. Risk aversion suspended!

It’s fine to trade some of these guys, but we can’t trade all of them for futures some have to come back with players or cap dumps. To stay above the floor.

Does anyone know the true mechanics of the no trade list? The way people talk about it doesn't make any sense to me.

It makes no sense that a team should have to ask for this list or that the list should change at the whim of the player. It would make much more sense that everyone who has a clause submits their list at a certain time of year such as July 1 and then that list is good for the year and they can change it the next year.

Why should a team need to ask? That just sets off all these alarm bells, makes things awkward and lets the agent do some digging to try to get them more leverage as to where they go. And then what, can they just keep changing it? Would be a dumb system.

It depends on how the No trade list is negotiated and written into the contract.

The most common mechanism in the NHL for no trade lists is that a player submits a list on July 1st that is good for the entire season.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Players can negotiate they only have to give a no trade list within 24 hours of the team requesting it and the list is only good for 2 weeks, for example.

It is really a matter if the player has the leverage to ask for a more fluid NTC and if the signing GM is willing to give the player one.

I was curious about how much the Flames have to monitor this. Ended up seeing something unusual. If the season ended today and the Flames didn't sign any of their pending UFA's or RFA's, they would still start the season with 24 roster players (one too many) with a salary of $86,296,666. The floor next year is $76,900,000. They can trade away just under $10MM and reach the floor. The unusual part is potentially having more roster players than spots to start the next year.

In the case of Raz. He had a list of teams he would not go to, which had been turned in. The team could still ask, if he would waive that list for any of those teams. He has right of refusal. In his case he was a UFA. which means he could sign with any team on July 1st, and have a bidding war. However he cannot deny a trade to a team not on his list. But he cannot deny fefuse to re sign with a team which brings his trade value down. If he agrees to sign with the new team, it brings his trade value up. He is not holding anybody hostage ,only exorcising his right under the league aggreement. Hope this makes sense.

Correct, which is why you have to have a couple bloated contracts, or cap dumps, to make things balance.

Huby (untradeable) + Wolf (keeper) + Coronato (probably a keeper but IMO if we can use him + D to get a C that should be looked at) + Bahl (definite keeper)+ Backlund (retiring here)= 33.1 mil, 43% of the floor in 5 players.

I don't think we are going to have a real challenge making the floor until Huberdeau is gone. At which point I hope it is not our concern at all anymore.
