Yes, I had totally forgotten that name until you posted it and I recall he went from being rather pedestrian to having a hell of a career.

Heineman is another one we traded without ever playing, though we always do seem to hold them for at least a small amount of time. And it does seem tied to players who aren't exactly thrilled to be reporting to Calgary.

It was a weird situation - the Flames traded a second (that turned into Brandon Saad) and Wayne Primeau for Stralman and a 7th. Before the season started, they traded him to Columbus for the pick that turned into Max Reinhart, and he promptly put up 34 points in his first season there.

Its possible he didn't want to be in Calgary and they did him a favour and moved him.

Totally. If you think the inside info is legit you have to know it doesn’t just work on demand. If you think it does, then you’re just asking to be told fairy tales.

Listening to FranklyHockey. Mentions the flames still want to be competitive when the new rink opens. Getting the Andersson piece done they can focus on Kadri and Coleman and also say they are not forced to move these guys and can ask other teams to “make them move”

Stating Coleman and Kadri are valued pieces that they only need to cash in if they get the offer they want.

Also talks about the Flames and how they really should have made the deal last year when there were 2 runs and no leverage to the outside parties (other teams and player).

Stralman had an undiagnosed lung issue while he was with the Leafs, Flames, and Blue Jackets.

Not until he got to the Rangers was it properly diagnosed and treated.

It held him back from becoming a NHL regular.

I really have no idea how this team can be competitive in 2 years.

We're not even close and this team is allergic to being pro-active.

They want to placate their golden boy though.

They were competitive last year

I have no idea how but they were

Lots of picks to trade and $$ for UFAs to sign !

If I squint hard enough I can see them talking themselves into this year being a blip

4th period says that several teams have already reached out about Whitecloud and Conroy will consider flipping him

https://www.thefourthperiod.com/pagn...ocheck-in-play

The Flames aren’t expected to be done, as they have more irons in the fire.

Forwards Blake Coleman, Nazem Kadri and Ryan Lomberg are among the names teams are eyeing, with the Dallas Stars still interested in Coleman, who has another year left on his contract. While it may still be too early to assess Dallas GM Jim Nill’s desire to land the Plano native, the Stars are on his preferred trade list.

Soon after word spread that the Flames moved Andersson, several teams reached out to Calgary GM Craig Conroy about defenceman Zach Whitecloud, whom he acquired from the Knights and has two years left on his deal at a very appealing $2.75 million cap hit.

While there are obviously no guarantees a move is made here, I believe Conroy will consider flipping the 29-year-old rearguard between now and the March 6 trade deadline – he has options and more will appear.

What does Lomberg return in a trade as a rental? 3rd or 4th?

I mean, yeah you do that for sure IMO

You cannot load up on enough picks for my liking.

Plus it opens a spot up to keep playing youth in the bottom six, like Stromgren.

There's just not much out there even for UFAs or trade to make us competitive and we don't have the young pieces in the system yet to be competitive.

I guess if they went crazy and traded for Robert Thomas, signed Tuch and got a top 2 pick this year they could be battling for a wild card in a couple years.

Yeah I tend to agree. I am a little confused on the internal timeline for this team. I would think the teardown would have been a little more aggressive if they wanted to compete in 27/28 but they went from June 2024 - January 2026 where they made zero trades that subtracted players for futures.

There is patience being preached which I am good with I just hope they don’t put the foot on the gas before it is ready. Conroy didn’t go crazy based off last years performance to try and add a bunch of win now pieces but it is bizarre they are trading for such far down futures with hopes of being better sooner. I suppose they left themselves with little options based on how the trade negotiation went.

Why the desperate need to be competitive for the new stadium? Are they going to be bending us over that much with the price increases that they are scared nobody will attend unless the team is good? Usually there is a bit of a honeymoon period with a new stadium because everyone wants to check it out.

Either way, no way this team is competitive at opening. The best they can hope for, and what they should be fully embracing, is that this team will be bringing in the fans because of enthusiasm for the future brought via elite prospects. That's what will get me back.

At worst, they will still be middling because of some rushed retool...which will have only sucked out even more enthusiasm from the fanbase.

If this is the case then you probably shouldn't have traded your best trade piece for a package where the primary assets will be like 18 and 17 years old when the rink opens.

I'm meh on the Andersson trade right now but what happens next is going to dictate a lot of how I feel about it. That was (thankfully) a rebuilding trade, long term assets that aren't going to help for years (Whitecloud aside). Don't make a move like that and say "oh but we still want to be competitive in two years". If we're doing this then don't half measure this thing, Whitecloud should be a Star or whoever by the deadline, Coleman should be back in Tampa, Kadri should be gone as well. And do it now so we're not saying "oh that's not bad value for a rental" this time next year with Coleman.

My ideal scenario would be:

1. Move Coleman with retention
2. Move Lomberg
3. Flip Whitecloud

In the summer when two retention spots open back up, trade Kadri with retention if it increases the return, which it surely would..

With how Kadri has been playing, he must go now.

Yeah, I fail to see any way we are competitive over the next few years. Our picks we just got won't end up playing for us until years down the road.
