A couple of years ago he was almost dismissive when questioned about his future with the team at the end of the season, making it seem to me he was intent on moving on at the end of his deal. That’s what made retaining him at the deadline to push for the playoffs so futile in my mind.
Hard to be upset with Andersson, his time is now, not 3-4 years from now, so I understand his intentions. I hope he gets a cup one day, but unless it’s this year I hope it doesn’t involve Vegas.

At the risk of sounding ignorant and insulting your from a prayer, I feel like Andersson was an average second pair defenseman .
If I'm a Knights fan, on the one hand it's encouraging to see my general manager make moves and always go for a cup run, but at the same time I would be upset that we just gave up quite a lot of our future.

Yes, you are correct in your analysis. It is a pretty good return for Rasmus.

|
Because he was drafted 4 years ago, I believe he can declare he's leaving college any time after this season ends and become a UFA 30 days later or June 1, whichever is later (see Justin Schultz et al). I don't think anything in the new CBA changes that for him.
If he goes back for one more year of college, the Flames will control his rights until August 15, 2027.

Vegas seems to be a location that free agents want to go. I don’t think they care about futures.

If I'm a player and I knew I was going to a team long term why would I do anything that makes that teams future worse? Can't fault him for that as a bigger return hurts your future team moving forward.

Thats where the disconnect comes from.
Plays 25 minutes a night in all situations and has twice as many pts as the next Dman on the club....top 20 in the NHL i believe.
Very much more than average 2nd pairing guy.

I’m generally a lurker but have a legit question for those that may have watched Whitecloud. How good of a top-4 D is he, better/worse than Andersson? I anticipate with some of the stats that have been posted there’s a chance that he’s worse in generating offense for an inconsistently offensive team.
I don’t like that we’re this low standings wise but if we’re going to suck naturally might as well get our only ever top-3 pick for once while also hoping to have a flippable asset for more picks.
The rumours and other posts certainly had my hopes up but I’m comfortable with the return but irked it’s with Vegas… Maybe it’s a long con and Andersson is now a sleeper agent to tank the Knights this year. That way we get a higher pick with their 2026 1st Rounder.

GOAT!

So we get a 29 year old bottom 6 forward, a 22 year old defencman drafted in the 7th round, a late first and second round pick in 2027 and zero picks in this year's draft.
For the #1 defenceman on the market, and we retaind 50% of his salary.

He is a solid #3, which is great on its own. However, most teams in the league would have 2 dman better than him imo.

No.
He is a solid 2nd pairing RHD.
Also the Flames already have the Vegas 26 1st round pick.

It's clear.
If they win the cup this year, the 28 2nd becomes a 28 1st
However, if they finish bottom 10 next year, the 27 1st becomes a 28 1st. In that scenario, and if they won the cup in 26, then the 28 2nd becomes a 29 1st (instead of a 28 1st), and we would then hold their 28 and 29 1sts, both unprotected

Flames have tons of cap space and since the season is half done 50% retained is about $1.25 million. Which isn’t much.
Whitecloud’s salary is half of Andersson’s. So it’s probably a wash.

We probably needed to retain on Andersson anyway to facilitate making other moves, while staying above the floor.

Not sure if this has been answered in the interim, but my understanding is that the NHLPA felt that players who were traded with those conditions attached weren't being re-signed because the acquiring team didn't want to have to pay the higher price. So even though there was potential for a 3rd round pick to be upgraded to a 2nd if the player re-signed, the team acquiring them would be disincentivized to re-sign them.

He is not as good as Andersson. I compared him to Zadorov, I think that is pretty fair - Zadorov with less offense
