The part that irritates me the most is that in order to get the conditional 1st, we are cheering for our Hanifin pick to be worse. Or, if we have this year's pick be better, we don't get the upgraded pick. Either way, we get bent over.

I really wish the first next year wasn't top 10 protected but otherwise I feel sufficiently whelmed

Are we cheering for Vegas to win the cup this year then?

Indeed. It would've been better had we been able to trade with another suitor that had a '26 first round available. a '26 - 1st, '27 - 2nd plus a prospect and a player would've been a B.

I'm a finance guy... the 'time value' of draft picks weighs heavy on me.

Markstrom, Andersson, Hanifin, Lindholm, Tkachuk are all cut from the same cloth.

For Tkachuk - it seems to have worked out. He has 2 cups.

Markstrom - not so much.
Hanifin - TBD - he forced his way to Vegas.
Lindholm - it failed miserably with VAN and he turned down big money and it backfired. Now with BOS.
Andersson - TBD - he forced his way to Vegas.

This isn't a Flames only thing. This is the new NHL.

Players will put themselves FIRST.

Organizations have to adapt and become cut-throat.
And they all brought the Flames more than Marner brought the Leafs. Conroy said nobody was walking to FA and has been true to his word. Tkachuck, Johnny, Marner all were gambles on the part of Treliving.

The Vegas part is what people hate most. We have to cheer against ourselves already holding the Vegas 2026 1st round pick with the hopes that we maybe get another 1st round pick. If Vegas comes up short then we still likely hurt our asset and have very little benefit.

After the last two trades with playoff conditions both failed (Vegas and Stars), Conroy should have demanded a better condition on this deal especially because we had extra skin in the game.

If we could have traded Andersson to the Bruins for a 1st with nothing else, it would have been disappointing but not as bad as this feeling of self-sabotage while also bending over backward to enable Vegas. It's a yucky deal.

Athletic trade ratings

Mark Lazerus:
Vegas A-
Calgary B-

Harman Dayal
Vegas B+
Calgary: B

I would probably say that's in the range. I'd give Vegas an A- and Calgary a B-.

I have a hard time a 2nd round pick value to Whitecloud. He was a throw in to this deal and he could just as likely be the same in a future trade.

Paying more attention to Kadri now. But without someone to play C, I’m hesitant to believe Conroy will deal him.

Can’t help but feel a little bad for Conroy. In retrospect, he wasted a lot of time on trying to get a bigger return. Seems it was always going to be a rental trade.
Did you watch him when VGS won the cup? An absolute warrior. And he plays top 4 minutes on what many people (including me) consider the best defensive group in the NHL (well, before Petrangelo got hurt).

He is a RD with significant playoff experience and has a steal of a contract.

People are under-rating him significantly here. I would compare him to Zadorov

is there a significant difference between say the 28th and 32nd overall pick? I need graphs!

I don't mind spreading out the picks. I liked the idea of 3 firsts this year to create more of an opportunity to move up if it was there.
But beyond that, I like the idea of spreading the picks out.

I've become very used to having 2 firsts and want that to continue!

Also, with Andersson gone, Whitecloud might be the most attractive RD available. And Conroy is acutely aware of which teams are interested in one. SJS and DAL are both in the market, and there are others.

Getting a good return for Whitecloud would turn this trade into a huge win
Hope you’re right, because we don’t need Whitecloud.

So I think the problem with this trade initially is that their isn't a piece to get excited about...I liked the idea of the Leafs 1st from Bruins, I like Poitras a lot, and I think we liked the idea of Danielson.

So this deal not having a piece like that hurts, but the overall value of the deal is fine.

2027 1st - Likely will be late but you never know
2027 2nd that could become a 1st - More ammo in the toolkit and provides protection on the pick the Flames have getting worse this year (would have loved if it was conference finals instead of win cup)
Wiebe - who knows. Feels like a nothing inclusion

But the piece that might be undervalued here is Whitecloud.

How different are Brandon Carlo and Zach Whitecloud? Similar age, both very much physical defensive dmen, similar career offensive numbers (Carlo: 0.18 P/G, Whitecloud: 0.21 P/GP)

With Whitecloud being on a very affordable contract for 2 more seasons, and with the constant need of contenders for RH dman, I'm not certain that he couldn't get another 1st in return.

Dallas would probably love to have him too.

All we do is keep giving Vegas players to make them better, and more time to keep making their team better. I hope MacCrimmon at least bought Conroy some fancy shoes and a nice dinner before this deal happened.

as a poster said earlier, Vegas' pick was going to be likely mid 20's this year anyway - so at worst it drops a few spots.

better they miss the playoffs this year for our picks.

The return is underwhelming, not bad but because it's f'n Vegas again it feels like a robbery. Wiebe does nothing for me and hopefully Whitecloud can be flipped. Rasmus Andersson was one of my favourite Flames, I was pumping his tires even last year when he looked bad, I thought he should be a guy who should always be a Flame.

I think once people see Whitecloud, for a half dozen or so games, they will like this trade a lot more.
Conroy did extremely well, for having his hands tied.

I think people will be pleasantly surprised with Whitecloud's trade value if the Flames do a good ol pump and sell. He is a cup winner after all. And there's a reason he was one of the final 3 remaining original Golden Knights.

Whats the history of trading with an extension? I seem to remember Tkachuk being the first ever instance? Is it the new expectation? Feels rare to me.
