Anything can happen. The last two President's Trophy winners are currently 27th and 31st in the standings and the winner of the last two Cups is 4 points behind the last wildcard spot.

A rebuild that has a plan to have 25-30 picks in the first 3 rounds over a 5 year period takes time to show results. Despite doing a good job getting Suniev, Conroy was effectively first able to start accumulating these picks in the 2024 draft.
2024 - 6 picks
2025 - 4 picks
2026 - currently 5 picks
2027 - currently 5 picks
2028 - currently 3 picks.
Suspect he continues to accumulate picks and the total number for that period of time ends up north of 25 but less than 30. Conroy has never done anything to indicate there is any desire to be competitive when the new arena arrives and I doubt that will change either.
Folks can be mad about the plan but the plan seems pretty clear to me.

I agree with you...this is the plan.
When do we make the playoffs though? Missing this year puts us 4yrs out. We'll be looking at 7yrs+ out of the playoffs by the end, with no communication from management that we're in a rebuild.
Tough look. Pretty cool that you're reading between the lines and are a savvy fan that see's the end game I guess.
Anyway I'm happy we have lots of picks, that alleviates one of my frustration with this team over the years. They're also valuing those picks and developing them so we don't have to spend assets to get bottom 6 or pairing guys. Just need to add some top line talent now to the roster in the next few drafts.
AND we still have guys to ship out for picks.
Slow boat...but whatever.

Whitecloud is a solid D, and I think many here are going to like his game. Defense, physicality, drops the gloves. I would argue that he's worth at least a 2nd, and he is signed to a pretty good contract.
The only question I have is regarding the log jam on RD. I think it makes it harder to give both Parekh and Brz regular minutes, unless they make another move. I might be in the minority, but I actually like Whitecloud better than Lohrei in terms of a fit with the Flames, because they already have that player in Parekh.
|
I wonder if they move Weegar to left side like last year. Forbidable D pairings with Weegar on left. Could mentor Parekh or support Whitecloud while Bahl pairs with Parekh.
Kuz and Brz become third pair.

I'm stunned that people are upset with the return - for a rental, I think the flames did really well.
I HATE that it's Vegas that gets him, though...

Anyway, the only way to win this trade is to draft Calgary Flames with these picks, so it was always gonna be a long term wait and see

I hope they fall flat on their face now, so we get a better pick this year

I’m interested to see what happens next. Wonder if Rasmus extends early or hits the market. I also wonder if he does if he circles back to Calgary. Seems to be a guy who truly appreciated playing here.

Add me to the disappointed crowd.
Was secretly hoping for a blue chip center prospect. I liked the Boston rumours more than the Vegas return.
Really curious what this last offer was that Sec mentioned and what team was involved.
As a season ticket holder myself this deal “doesn’t” have me ready to abandon ship.
More Meh and move on…

I voted break even as expected, but I would downgrade slightly because Vegas. Otherwise, this is a good rental package and Conroy did well.
I still think the larger fail is walking these players to free agency and then letting the agents get involved and the mess that brings.

I'd call this a B- (and voted Break Even in the poll). Had the 1st been for '26 i think this would've been a solid B. Not a huge fan of pushing the draft return an additional year into the future.
Like a lot of us, I was hoping to be ecstatic about the return... but such is the lot of a flames fan's life.

Probably out of the playoffs for at least 7 years total, maybe 8. This year will be 8 straight for Anaheim, that is probably a decent team to compare the Flames rebuild to imo.

When does the high second round begin and end?
Would Gridin and Potter be considered late 1st round picks or high 2nd round picks?

A 1st and a 2nd is decent. Don't love the value of those picks, they will be late in the round and very far off. It’s likely 6 or 7 years before that 2028 pick makes the NHL. I have a hard time a 2nd round pick value to Whitecloud. He was a throw in to this deal and he could just as likely be the same in a future trade.
Paying more attention to Kadri now. But without someone to play C, I’m hesitant to believe Conroy will deal him.
Can’t help but feel a little bad for Conroy. In retrospect, he wasted a lot of time on trying to get a bigger return. Seems it was always going to be a rental trade.

Apparently (Sec214) the Flames intend to flip Whitecloud.
He is being massively under-rated here, and is a pretty valuable asset - especially at $2.75M for 2 more years, and he is a right-shot Dman
Also, with Andersson gone, Whitecloud might be the most attractive RD available. And Conroy is acutely aware of which teams are interested in one. SJS and DAL are both in the market, and there are others.
Getting a good return for Whitecloud would turn this trade into a huge win
