It wasn't months ago. We ran the poll in January (weeks ago) and you voted for this:
Fire sale: Move 3 vets before Olympics even if offers are not great, to fall down the standings

I like this trade after some digestion.
1st - 2027 (Vegas likely to peak soon with the aging vet core)
2nd - 2028 (which has outside shot at becoming 1st in 2028)
Whitecloud - 2nd pair RD has value in this league especially at his low cap hit. (worth at least a 2nd and prospect) Clearly not in our long term plans.
Shea Theodore D 23:48
Noah Hanifin D 23:42
Brayden McNabb D 20:47
Zach Whitecloud D 18:35
Wiebe - nice numbers at UND as a Dman, trending up with much more value that 7th rounder now. 14pts in 24 games as a Dman.

They just traded one of their best players, for picks.
But you were going to be mad no matter what they did

Put yourself in another GM’s shoes. The word was out Rasmus was hesitant to extend with anyone other than Vegas. How much would you give up for a rental dman who you know won’t extend?

Anyone who signs Raz for anything more than $7mil/per is going to have Huberdeau/Lindholm type regrets.

You cannot squint hard enough to turn this into two firsts.
But it's the best Conroy could do with a rental player.
|
By the tables two 2nd round picks by the team drafting 25th in the first round is 1.3 x 2 or 2.6
The 31st pick is worth 2.8
And no I'm not sure Whitecloud is worth a 2nd but doubt it would take long to find some similarities in recent trades that suggest he is or could be.
You don't have to agree but I'm not squinting!

The Carlo return is the sticking point with me...
I believe Vegas is overrated and could fall off a cliff at some point, look at the amount of Loses OTL this year
I wonder if whitecloud is a handpicked defensive type for Parekh, heavy tough damn?
Overall though has a chance to payoff

Don’t ####ing wait till last year and lose all leverage to trade.
Trade Coleman and Kadri THIS year.

We got Gridin with a late round 1st and everyone seems happy with him. Gonna have to chill a bit and see if we use these picks to move up the draft or select another “Gridin” like player which will reduce the sting. Only thing I hope is that Whitecloud doesn’t move ahead of Parekh on depth chart. If they do something stupid a keep him around to minimize Zaynes time that’s gonna be painful and damaging…

Whitecloud and Parekh play the same position (RD). Whitecloud blocks Parekh from playing.

There is no benefit of keeping Andersson except risks
He can now go to the Olympic and knock himself out
Conroy set a deadline and traded for the best offer.
It’s actually a fair deal except for the delusional that thought they were going to get a lottery picks or a top prospect like Hagen or Misa from another team
Andersson wasn’t going to get that even with an extension

Is our rebuild going well is the question? It looks like we're on the slow boat in my opinion, which is frustrating, but whatever. Drafting is better, that gives me hope. two super stars emerging for our team from some high picks the next few years changes a lot.
|
Conroy always had a clear plan from the very beginning, accumulate as many top 90 picks as possible and hope that a decent percentage hit. That has been his plan from day one and he basically has never deviated from it. Doubt he will deviate anytime soon. A rebuild that has a plan to have 25-30 picks in the first 3 rounds over a 5 year period takes time to show results. Despite doing a good job getting Suniev, Conroy was effectively first able to start accumulating these picks in the 2024 draft.
2024 - 6 picks
2025 - 4 picks
2026 - currently 5 picks
2027 - currently 5 picks
2028 - currently 3 picks.
Suspect he continues to accumulate picks and the total number for that period of time ends up north of 25 but less than 30. Conroy has never done anything to indicate there is any desire to be competitive when the new arena arrives and I doubt that will change either.
Folks can be mad about the plan but the plan seems pretty clear to me.

The return isn't what I hoped for, but Whitecloud and a 2nd is significantly better than Miromanov coming back in the Hanifin trade. No idea if Wiebe is anything, but if he's playing with Reschny currently he's at least more than a complete throw-in.
The biggest takeaway is that this is the way the trade market works for a smaller Canadian team. A pending UFA is available, and even with as much safe-guarding as possible by Conroy, that player still controls a massive amount of the trade because he can flat out say I'm going to free agency. Less confident teams will offer less as a result, or back out entirely.
The Detroit and Boston rumoured packages excited me more, but that's also because I'm more familiar with those prospects compared to the unknowns of late 1st / 2nd round draft picks. But Potter and Gridin both looks great to me now...

I think Wiebe is quite a bit better than most are giving him credit for. Apparently Vegas offered him a contract but he decided to stay at UDak for 1 more year Probably goes pro next season.
