I never knew Coronato was that small. He doesn't really play that small.

He plays aggressively, for sure.

But I don't want him playing with two other smaller players, I don't want Coronato to have to be the tough guy on the line.

You are right, I was just surprised at his size.

Maybe Honzek is a fit.

This is a pretty silly statement IMO. You can be 5'10 or shorter and be like Blake Coleman, Brad Marchand, Theo Fleury, Lomberg... and you can be 6'2 or taller and be like Sharangovich, Elias Pedersson, or Dougie Hamilton. Height is not a great indicator of Toughness, Tenacity or being an effective physical hockey player... especially in today's NHL.

There is absolutely no reason why a line of 5'10 hockey players couldn't be an effective NHL line. One of the best flames lines in the last 15 years was Gaudreau (listed 5'9 but probably closer to 5'6), Sean Monahan (6'2 but not physical), and Jiri Hudler (5'10).

Yes, you can be shorter, and tough as nails. And yes, you can be taller, and softer than baby poop.

None the less, you never see a line of three guys all 5'10" or less. For a reason.

I mean, in Montreal, maybe, but in Calgary? Very much doubt it.

Maybe they can reenact the “pony line” 90 years later!

Rangers had a line called the Smurf Line. Mark Pavelich, Robbie McClanahan and Anders Hedberg. But Hedberg was 5'11" so...

Canucks went with a line of Hoglander-Dries-Garland once. Now that was small.

You probably don’t see a line of 5’10 guys because there’s only 20 regulars in the NHL

Quote:
“Just before their season started, I got on the phone with Ethan and we were talking about his development plan,” relayed Ray Edwards, the Flames’ director of player development. “We have a goals and objectives part of that plan and we were talking about it and he said to me, ‘Ray, I want you to put 20 goals and 20 assists on there.’ I was like, ‘Really?!? That seems a little lofty.’ But he said, ‘No, I want that on there.’
Quote:
Rather than pat himself on the back for his 31 points in 22 games so far, he’s actually adjusted his aims a little higher.

“My goal is to win freshman of the year,” Wyttenbach declared. “That’s something I kind of have my eyes set on. I’m obviously in the mix right now, but a strong second half is pretty important to stay in that race.
Quote:
“Obviously, Ethan is doing really well for us,” said Rand Pecknold, the highly-regarded head coach at Quinnipiac. “There are a lot of kids, as you watch them at 18 or 19 or 20, that come up through the ranks that have the ability to make plays. I think the thing that separates Ethan is not only does he make plays, but he finishes plays. He finds ways to score that goal. He finds ways to put that in the perfect spot that the guy he’s passing too can finish the play and score a goal.

“I guess that’s the best way to describe it — he finishes plays, and it’s a very unique skill-set. You can’t teach that type of offensive vision and the ability to finish, both the passing and the scoring.”
Quote:
By his recollection, he wasn’t tapped for any defensive-zone starts through his first 10 games or so at Quinnipiac, a sign that the coaches weren’t quite ready to trust him in those scenarios.

“He’s still rounding out the rest of his game,” Pecknold said. “You know, he’s not a 200-foot player yet. He has a little ways to go in that. But he’s made good progress. Probably the biggest thing he needs to keep working on is physically. He’s still a ways away from playing in the NHL. We have a great strength coach. I would say it’s an elite strength program. It’s one of the best things we do at Quinnipiac. So we’ll put some muscle on him over the next few years and he has a great chance to play in the NHL one day.”

Excellent example of the biggest area the Flames drafting has improved from the dark days of picking the biggest body available with limited skill and hockey IQ. Looking forward to him pushing for pro duty in 2027ish.

Love the kids confidence and drive. Doesn't sit on his accomplishments, just raises the bar. Super exciting prospect

There's a lot to like there beyond the crazy point totals this season. He seems very smart and driven - you can see in those interviews he's very introspective about his play.

What a story it would be if he maintains this trajectory to the NHL level, with the Gaudreau connection and all. We're lucky to have that Coronato tie-in with him, that's a great guy for him to have as a role-model. And should quiet any of the inevitable 'Will he sign?' chatter.

He happens to be ahead of notable draft picks Porter Martone and Michael Hage in scoring. Hage is almost a full year older, Martone is 4 months. All players ahead of Wyttenbach are older, some by a few years. Only Max Plante is close to the same age, 1-year older.

Wyttenbach - 12G - 19A - 31P - 1.41PPG
Martone - 14G - 11A - 25P - 1.39PPG
Hage - 11G - 19A - 30P - 1.36PPG

This is the only way the rebiggle works - essentially they need a superstar, lottery level pick to pop big time out of nowhere and save ownership from its refusal/stupidity to lean into being bad for a year or two.

Also, Shoutout to Wes Gilbertson for writing an excellent article! I’ve also been enjoying his segments with Steinberg lately as well.
