I agree, maybe Conroy views it as leverage in some way?

Teams get 3 retention slots or has that changed?

That's only going to happen if the deal is on the verge of being done or he's so banged up that the risk of playing him isn't worth it.

No, I probably had it wrong.
Still, the point stands that there are a limited number. So it’s another kind of organizational asset. Retaining for 3+ seasons is worth a lot more than just part of one season, regardless of the amount retained.

If it's this season's Andersson it is likely team friendly, if it's last season's Andersson it is not.

Honest question: Who else would they need retention for? What other notable veteran player would they be trading away and have a need for a retention slot? I think every other veteran is going to be here for the long term.

I think you get 3 retention slots, unless that has been changed. We only have 2 right now until this season is over with Markstrom.
Rebuilding teams should definitely use them. We may not be able to do the 50% + 50% retention anymore, but we can still be a team that can broker the original 50% on expiring contracts to get a good pick.

If the rumours are true then a deal is close to be done. Even if it's an estimated week or so away they shouldn't play him. An injury now would be a disaster for the organization.

I'd say it's only close if Andersson is interested in an extension with Detroit and it's just a matter of working out the contract.

This is my point too. No other asset will bring back as much value as a fully retained Kadri looking ahead to our retention slot use:
This year: Markstrom, Coleman, Kadri - Andersson blocked from retention
Next year: Coleman, Kadri, Hanley? / Pachal? - Meh, neither asset worth retaining
Following years: Kadri, Farabee?, ______ - Still have an empty slot, so no impact to retaining on Kadri
The other potential retention options are all inferior to retaining on Kadri.
The only consideration is if we are getting enough value back. If the acquiring team is sending a spare parts package then they can have Kadri at $7M. If they are sending a blue chip prospect then that could be worth the 4 retention slots.
Sharangovich can stay on the roster and eat popcorn while helping the team stay above the salary floor.

I'm still hearing teams want to buy after the Olympic break and nothing is imminent on the Andersson front. I am not trying to be a buzzkill, just what I have heard.

I feared this would happen. No team wants to acquire a player with a potential season-ending injury.

Conroy only has to say “I’m trading him before the break, best offers now or he’s going elsewhere”.
Only needs one solid offer.
I imagine the extension is the biggest dealio, which undoubtedly takes a few days to sort out - there’s a lot to sort out.
Conroy controls the asset ultimately, and it’s the asset everyone wants.

That logic is nonsense. He could be injured the day after they acquire him just as easily.

Its not just Andersson that could get injured. Take Detroit for example, they have Seider, Raymond and Larkin all playing in the Olympics. If anyone of them got injured at the Olmypics, it would leave a big hole on the team. Give up a 1st and high-prospect, just to see an injury (or two) to a major player derail playoff hopes.
Then add in that when you look at the standings right now, how many teams are playoff locks? 3 in the West? It was either Sec or Royle that said teams in the East want to create separation, which makes sense as 8 points (with the top team having played 2-3 more games) is the difference between leading a division and missing playoffs.

They could just as easily get injured in NHL games now as well....im not sure i understand this panic to get a deal done pre-olympic because injuries might happen there.

I’d guess that stance may differ if a) rental or b) long term contract signed?

Takes two to tango. If a team is reluctant to pull the trigger, then the seller sometimes has to wait. We don't know if there are multiple teams sharing then same sentiment, or if it is only a couple. Hopefully we can get a buyer that is serious to lock it in asap. Still a few weeks before the Olympic break.
