Now you could always EA our franchise and give them everything we have for 1 guy but it’s not realistic. I’d toss any idea of him in CGY anytime soon to the side.

There is literally nothing to be gained by trading him. Hes there at least until the end of his second contract.

Tij Iginla is a bonefide star prospect. Utah is going to build around him. I think he's going to be a better pro than prospect too. He reminds me of Matthew Tkachuk in that way, he knows what it takes to be an NHL leader, every interview I see of him is just a guy who gets "it".

We may be in the position typically referred to as sellers, but we're equally trying to buy possible pieces of their future core using players that are good now but not as good later as currency.
By the logic in your post do we also need to make an offer that they can't say no to?
There will be times when it will be worth it for us to spend significant draft capital for a couple years of a high impact player. We're at the other end of that pendulum right now, but some teams are in that position currently.
I'm not sure why me suggesting we don't need to set the threshold for a deal at one that takes the other team to the cleaners was interpreted that I want the flames to make a losing trade. I feel like there should be a trade out there where both GMs can come out having made their teams better given their current goals.
Our currency also vanishes into the aether if not spent in the next year and a bit (maybe sooner if performance drops off), so I'm also not sure we should be quite as comfortable holding and riding out their contracts as the organization seems to be presenting.

Well maybe the Flames should be in fire sale mode as some want. I am personally comfortable with Conroy setting his price and waiting for other teams to meet that price. We could be that team that Brian Burke talked about and get walked on a deal and then the rest of the league knows you can take that team to the cleaners. I am personally find with what Conroy is doing. Don’t actually think his plan is to walk guys to the end of their contracts and not get anything for them. He has never ever done that in all his time as the GM, I highly doubt he starts doing it now.

You assume he is shopping guys but we don’t know if that is the case. We know he could have got the Carlo return for Andersson last year which looks like a steal for the Bruins with Minten playing on their team at the first currently 10th overall.
We know they could have got the Nelson return at least for Kadri but in that situation he had more control.
If the deadline comes and goes and Coleman and Kadri both remain I think it will be a failure for the Flames if they only trade Andersson and do not end up with a top 5 pick. It would be a disaster if they hold onto 2 veterans and play their way out of the bottom 5.

I guess there were some fans who thought the Leafs first this year would be that good after they finished 4th overall last year. I am not sure anyone thought last year that Minten and a pick somewhere between 26-28th overall was a very good return. The Bruins lucked out in that the Leafs have had a monumental collapse.
We know they never could have got the Nelson return because by “little bit more control” you mean ironclad NMC that the player would not move off from.

This fanbase will need to get over its attachment to Tij. It was over the moment he was picked 6th. We are not entitled or destined to have him just because of Jarome. It seems like royle has to post a disclaimer here once a week that he is not getting traded

At the end of the day I hope you can gloat and say “I told you so” to the skeptics on this board because the flames pivoted due to their terrible start and accelerated the sell off of some veterans because they put themselves in a deep hole at the start of the year.
If the deadline comes and goes and Andersson is the only piece that moves out then I struggle to see this as a positive proactive season. If they land a top 5 pick that will salvage holding onto the mid 30’s vets but based on the last 24 games they are closer to playing at a bubble team rate rather than a bottom feeder.
I am hopeful they move off all 3 vets and see it as a possibility but knowing how this organization has operated in the past it is also fair to assume they will only trade the player with the expiring contract and hold onto the rest.

I agree, the Flames are usually more reactive than proactive when it comes to trades. So Andersson contract is expiring and they have to deal with that situation, he will be traded. The others are not expiring so I can see them just leaving it and doing nothing.

Not sure it is gloating. I know I am not going to skirt the truth by saying things like “Kadri had more control” when Kadri had complete control and a veto on any trade and every indicator was that he did not want to be traded last year. Bringing up the Nelson trade seems almost pointless for me.
As for the Carlo trade, I just don’t recall anyone at the time saying “the Flames should have got what looked like it would be a late 1st and Minten” for Andersson with 820K a year retained. The trade at the time looked like less of a return than what the Flames got for Markstrom. Trade could still end up poor (or at least delayed for the return) because if the Leafs pick top 5 this year the pick becomes the Leafs 2028 1st round pick almost certainly.

Flip side is that we sell the vets off and get a dead cat bounce and we start winning with kids. Look at Vancouver. While andersson is no Hughes, you can’t tell me that’s not some element of distraction in the room. Our insiders have intimated as such.
For me, it’s not about moving vets come hell or high water this year to ensure a tank. It’s about making a sound deal that fits our vision, which is something we desperately lacked under Treliving. If we have to hold onto Coleman and Kadri if deals aren’t there, so be it. Conny has not disappointed with approach as yet.
What’s killed this franchise is that we’ve held onto star players and lost them for nothing. Losing Gio for nothing. Johnny for nothing. Brodie for nothing. Having to pay to move Monahan instead of trading him at his peak for value. Asset management is a thing, and Conny seems to get it.

Young good player, legend pedigree, with the potential to be a franchise guy. All the reasons we want him are why they’ll never trade him.

But that means the other 6 days he might be traded. So there’s hope.

There were a lot of Flames fans that would have traded Andersson last year. The Leafs were a top team but it was also clear they were not retaining Marner but whatever it is what it is and I hope the Flames will not regret holding onto Andersson and get a great return for him.
I also hope the Flames sell off the other vets when they have a clear opportunity to do so this season. I am hopeful but also have a healthy amount of skepticism that they will do more than trade the UFA they have committed to not lose for nothing.

Conroy has all of the leverage at this point. That will probably start shifting closer to the deadline on Andersson. The others all have term so zero pressure to move them.
